No disrespect nacht, to you or to anyone in Germany, but whenI read history I get the impression that people like your grandfather fought because they had no choice. I could be wrong, but I think that Sentient's point is that we still have a choice to change things for better or for worse. As we are frog marched towards the future, our freedom of choice will also disappear, and then it will be a real struggle for liberty.

I'm not sure I understand Gardner's point about boycotting t-shirts and stuff, or avoiding Chinese products like some young man who's still wearing his Christmas jumper said somewhere. The world is too big, and the dollar too weak, to make a difference. In fact companies in the US are falling over each other to invest their dollars in the Chinese market. Boycotting buying the odd plastic crap is like saying I'll boycott Antarctica by not putting ice cubes in my drink.

The "state" is made up of people you create violence against it and you risk killing and destroying the lives of others. Is that what your cause is all about? I've never advocating for killing anyone. I've never felt like my manhood or status in society was based reaping venegance on others no matter what their crime.

 

The dollar isn't all that strong any longer, since our president decided to go to war, and we have such large trade deficits with places like China. Showing you that only by working through the market can you have any lasting impact.

Choice #1: Become a person afraid of his government, his neighbours, his colleagues, even his own family, because he could end up a political prisoner, or executed for saying the wrong thing.

Choice #2: Try and change the world.

When you have two dishes on the menu, then you also have a limited choice of what goes with it. If one of those dishes is getting stamped on my head every day by a fadscist's boot then I choose dish #2. Boycotters can have my share of the boot.

Maybe the Americans won't protest because they are still feeding off the blood and sweat of the third world, and by squeezing the natural resources and assets of nations they invade. Maybe. Maybe the pillars of their civilization are held up on the shoulders of generations of African slaves, and the knees of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans who were lied to and told they would find a better life in the US. Maybe. Maybe Americans won't protest, because they think there will always be Irish immigrants to build their railways, or Chinese to do their laundry, or native Americans to provide them with more land, or Italians to feed them, or Germans to put them ahead in the field of science... maybe... maybe... maybe... or maybe it will be these very same people... these forgotten Americans, these looked-down-upon Americans, these Americans who were sold a lie instead of a dream.

It will be these Americans who will stand up for true liberty. The rope is close to snapping from the overweight capitalist it is supporting. The only thing that can save it is the people themselves by kicking off the fat pig before it drags everyone down with it, and the only thing any US government will not do is remind you the one single event of just what good ol' plain American folk are capable of doing. Long before Russian revolutions, and anarchist marches some decent people had enough of being treated like animals and they stood up. Some paid the price, and their history is hardly refered to by most Americans. And yet it is thanks to those few people that demonstrated, that protested, that fought, that sacrificed that we have workers rights.

The day was Mayday.

The place was Chicago.

And Americans are capable of protesting for their rights.
They have just been led to believe that it's futile.
