believe it or not, this actually reminds me of something, i forget the name of it, but there was a kind of desk top stationary steam engine, that was kind of a hobby kit that was fairly common in the 1950s and i think was still available in hobby shops right up into the 70s. you could probably still get one on ebay or some such, that had all kinds of accessories you could power with it, little tiny lathes that actually worked, and table saws, that sort of thing.
Yes matey I too remember it too, - called a MAMOD steam engine which, although stationary you could place rubber bands on the driving wheel and 'power' other things with it.
