Some people are into (so-called) retribution, very much so in fact. But I contend that NO ONE in this world “deserves” to suffer. There’s already so much suffering in this world. Why would it be better to cause more? :daisy: :daisy:
Good attitude dude. I think the desire for retribution comes largely from attachment to the ego. It's hard not to have ego attachment though, not to become angry when the ego is harmed. Sounds like you're on a good path though.
My dad always used to tell me "Ask yourself if this is something that will matter in 10 years". I learned a bit from his mentality. What goes around, comes around....

I've never really understood the need for retribution. I can't hold a grudge for longer than an hour. although I did hear a story on story corps on NPR a couple of weeks ago about a mother who lost her son to gang violence. She went to see her son's killer a few years later in prison to try to forgive him and move on, and not only did she forgive him but they became great friends. forgiveness is one thing, but to befriend your child's killer...i dont think I'm that big of a person.
i've been told, hamarabi's intention, was that the punishment should not exceed the crime. he did not wish to make the whole world toothless and blind. selfserving retribution is pointless. preventing crime is the point. no one, can of course be prevented from committing their first one, by any other means then their own not wanting to. fear alone does what? it makes criminal services more expensive and more profitable for those who accept the risks or don't care. so retribution is no magic wand at preventing it. instead one needs to look statistically at what creates markets for it. no law or punishment can prevent what there is sufficient demand for. that only creates markets for organized crime. obviously forgiveness alone is no solution either. people are always trying to make a zero sum either or question out of something that is miles away from being one. its really a cultural question, and by that, i mean its about if we romantacize and encourage more of aggressiveness or more of consideration. if people don't want to be inconsiderate, because they know what kind of world that creates, then they're not going to want to create a kind of world they don't want to live in. but if being the big deal is more important to them, then they don't care about hurting each other, may even think it makes them a big deal to do so. in that way, if you only think about retribution, that is only encouraging the same the same motivations, that make people harmful and not care that they are. even if the fear may stop some, many crimes will occur, because the idea of accepting hurting each other, is normalized by that. so really you need a culture in which people don't what to fuck it up for each other because they realize that ultimately, whatever their immediate personal 'gain' they are really making a pile of crap for themselves to have to live in.
