Hi all! Were any of you part of the Hippie or Counter Culture movement during the 60's or 70's? I'm trying to write a research paper and I've decided to cover music and the influence it had during the time and wanted to hear from actual people. If you don't know much about the music or the influence it had, anything you have to add about that time period would be greatly helpful and appreciated!

    Thank you all in advance!

I didn't live then but I've watched documentaries on that era as well as my own reports.

A few important music events associated with Hippies:

    Acid Tests with Grateful Dead
British Invasion/ Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band album
Pink Floyd pioneering playing to light show projections
Dylan goes electric and gives a political voice to rock
    Monterey Pop Festival
    Woodstock
    Altamont

It was the chosen way to communicate, other than the underground press.

Was the Toy Town movement in the UK associated with hippies at all? Or was that more of a mod thing?

I was there. Music was the thing, the guiding influence over everything, the soundtrack of our lives that influenced our hippie philosophy, albeit unknowingly or vaguely knowingly at the time. And if you think about the diversity in styles, from RocknRoll to folk to psychadelic to girl groups to soul, just so many different musical styles were accepted and popular. It didn't have to be hip hop or rap to like it, it could and was everything. There was much more natural freedom in life back then, much less government and media intrusion, and that freedom was reflected in the music. Also we were young and there was this incredible energy, like something was going to happen. There was an optimism that is gone now.

True, but also there were many other forms of expression. Tons of people were into crafts, art, theator, etc. Creativity abounded.

    Yeah,

I was a Haight Street Hippie during the late sixties and early seventies.
Places like Fillmore West and Winterland were magic.

One of the most memorable moments of my entire life was seeing Janis Joplin live at Winterland.
When she sang, "Piece of My Heart," I managed to get just a few feet away from the stage.
I was totally transfixed and mesmerized watching her and listening to her sing.
She had such intense emotion that seemed unreal in the power she had.
I have never before or since, seen a person emit and give out such intense, raw, emotional soul, spirit and power come from the voice of one human being.

There were many others, like Jimi Hendrix on the side of Haleakala Volcano, Maui in Hawaii.
There were also political statements in some of the music, Dylan, Stones, Beatles and many others.
I could go on and on about those days.
