I understand why the republicans do it, and that there is little differences in either party (when they are in power), but that is totally irrelevant as I see it...

Why do the people play the game?

What other choice does he have?

Would you be happier if he takes a stand and says he will let all the tax cuts expire?

Actually yes since the republicans haven't even actually agreed to extend unemployment benefits yet. The Democrats either need to grow some balls or just save the public some money and don't even bother running in 2012. I mean hell it's at the point congressional Democrats are pissed enough at the president themselves that they might be the one to filibuster their own president compromise. If Obama keeps going on like this, if the Republicans nominate someone who's actually moderate it's going to be a landslide GOP victory because Democrats aren't going to show up at the polls since Obama is already acting like a moderate Republican.

Democrats: 150 promises kept, 0 balls.

You are so full of shit it isn't funny. As soon as they started reporting that he wouldn't compromise and let all the tax cuts expire and unemployment run out, you would have been sitting here foaming at the mouth as you bitched about him not doing anything.

You keep saying he is acting like a moderate republican? You keep acting like a fascist republican... It's either all your way, or he is useless and should be shown the door...

They're lazy and it's easier to pretend things are okay short term. This alludes to a discussion in the "People" forum... which kinda hits the nail on the head about what's wrong with so many.... the problem is that it will literally take a complete economic catastrophe for them to wake up and by then it will be way too late.

The FACT is that Obama is in a lose-lose situation... any president would be regardless of what party is in power.

In my opinion the relevance of similarities between the parties come into play when potential voters buy too deeply into differences that are not going to make any difference to them. One menu item has open season on the working class declared on behalf of corporations via deregulations the other choice stifles economic growth with suffocating government expansion as problems are exploited to their benefit.

To me, neither one give a flying fuck about us and as long as the theater of partisan politics gets consumed by voters then effective government reform gets delayed another 2 and 4 years.

Democrats were willing to compromise to extending the tax cuts up to $1 million and cutting the payroll tax. They had an actual chance to play the Republicans own game and paint them in the corner for not being willing to compromise. And they were actually going to, probably because it's the lame duck session and plenty of them aren't going back but it actually looked like the Democrats in congress were going to make a fucking stand for the first time in 2 years. Then out comes Obama without having talked to congressional Democrat leaders saying he's willing to essentially give Republicans everything. It isn't about this one thing, it's about constant compromising to the point that the liberal wing of his own party is debating mutiny in congress over it.

I mean the real question is if this is how Obama acts during the lame duck session when his party has its last month in power and they actually want to make a stand in congress, how is he going to act during the next 2 years with a GOP majority in the house.

Do you not see the bullshit that this statement is? He didn't talk to the dem leaders?

All those fucking people ever do is talk... And not just them... also the republicans... Seriously man... Just because it doesn't give you a minute by minute breakdown of what he does during the day, doesn't mean he doesn't do anything if its not reported on.

Let's look at this all from a different perspective for a moment shall we?

Would you replace Obama with Bush (jr, the last president) today?

So, what other choice does he have that will make you happy?

He CAN'T push this through... he doesn't have the votes... the republicans can keep the government doing nothing but talking about it, without ever letting it come to a vote...

So, what is it that he can do, today, to make you happy?

Unfortunately ChronicTom has mentioned a not so obvious reality of the situation, as it pertains to his life as an American, granting him the ability to see others as full of shit, and their bullshit opinions.

Congratulations Tom, you have received the title of American Patriot.

What you are missing in your haste to laugh at people is that whether they are real labels, they are the labels that are applied.

Perhaps instead of just laughing, you would care to add something to the conversation or is "you're a bunch of fools" the best you have?

At least put up a fight in regards to the issue considering this aside from health care was one of the main platforms of his campaign. These aren't my words but someone on a different forum posted this and I think it essentially sums up how millions of the people who voted for him feel today:

I can't see a case for wanting Obama as president in 2012 aside from fearing the tea party. After all the disappointments, all the shit he's fed his base, he gave up on one of his main campaign promises with barely a whimper. He lost the most popular battle the Dems could have fought without an actual fight AND if we re-elected him we would get to see him lose this battle all over again in 2012.

I would hate all this but have some respect for Obama's "pragmatism" if he'd managed to decouple the two tiers from the tax cuts. At least then I'd know he was playing to win. Not doing that means he plans to - maybe even wants to - lose the fight again next time.

edit: And how can I forget his salt-in-a-wound sanctimony during his press conference basically calling out the progressive base of the party for "playing politics" by not wanting him to cravenly capitulate to hostage-takers.

Also for more irony, the payroll tax cut that Obama was hailing as part of the "compromise" does nothing to help tens of thousands of college and graduate students who work at their schools. Namely a base that played a large role in getting him elected to begin with.

Another aggravating thing is trying to spin it in the light of "Well now congress can move onto other things such as trying to repeal don't ask don't tell before the lame duck ends" like the Republicans are all of a sudden going to stop trying to block everything.

I think you may be miscalculating the loyalty of a voter base in an event the benefits were not renewed... Obama doesn't seem to be as he realizes that had he stuck to his guns, enough would jump ship to ensure he was a one-termer.

Repugs wanted the tax rates permanent... he gave them two years.
