Corporate malfeasance becomes ever more clear by the day and it makes me wonder if there are ANY honest companies! The lure of big bucks seems to negate any sense of morality in way too many companies.
Their are 3 general grades or asbestos, brown, blue and white. Brown has the worst hook shaped particles, blue is not much better, while white is ground and mixed with Portland cement to produce construction boards. The finished product is fairly harmless, but grinding the raw material was extremely harmful. This was what Cape asbestos did in south Africa, blowing thousands or tons of lethal dust into the atmosphere. It is everywhere, trapped in roofs and lofts, covering thousands of acres of previously agricultural land, at the bottom of lakes and water treatment farms, along with in the sewers.
So in the late 60’s I used to walk down the CNW tracks to my favorite fishing hole on the Brule River on the UP of Michigan border. One day as I climbed up to the tracks on my way home, the caboose of a very long ore train passed by very slowly……the RR guys told me I could ride up the grade back to my car. So I hopped on the caboose and rode back uphill until the train slowly started to accelerate. The guys told me how get off the train safely. a few years later the iron mines on the Menominee range closed and filled with water 10 years later, RR line was gone the ore boats don’t pick up the ore at Escanaba any more no more free rides on the caboose.
