The issue of religious freedom comes up in strange ways in the US. I know we also define things like freedom of speech and religion differently, which complicates things. For one thing, things like hate speech is considered protected, unless it leads to direct harm. And we have a lot of freedom when it comes to religion. The only problem is, some people here thinks that right includes the right to tell others how to worship and what to believe.

There was one case in the 80's. These three young brothers were disrupting class in the grade school testifying. They literally were making it impossible to teach the other students there. But they said their father told them they should do that. This was in the South, and most people even there agreed with the teachers and school. The three boys were being disruptive and violating the rights of the other students to an education. But I still remember. Some people in this small town supported what they were doing. They thought they should disrupt class with their religious testifying, and their teachers didn't have a right to stop them.

One time on "Real Time" with Bill Maher, Bill Maher was talking about a story. A woman was suing her employer for religious discrimination. She was a telemarketer. And she insisted on saying "God bless you" at the end of each call with a customer, even though her employer told her not to. But one of Maher's guests was a religious conservative. And even she agreed, that is more of an issue of following company rules and doing what your job requires. The product they were selling wasn't in any way religious. And her employer wasn't telling how to practice her religion. He just didn't want her saying that at the end of every phone call.
