People usually associate the Muslim religion with things like dismemberment of thieves and oppression of women. But that's probably due to the fact that the Muslim religion is so well codified or written down. Judaism and Christianity has the exact same punishments. We just don't practice them anymore. Thoughts?
Since when does the US not practice the oppression of women? Ask the former female Presidents in the Ivy League. Of the beatings administered to people of color by certain law “enforcement “ members.
The operative sentence is : "we don't practice them anymore". The suppression of women was common in ancient times, and Jews and pagan Greeks were among the worst offenders (Egyptians, not so much). The status of women in the U.S. was never as bad as in Islam, but it's certainly made dramatic strides in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As for punishments, we've also made strides in prohibiting "cruel and unusual" ones, and clarifying what those mean.
Funny that Muslims don't want women to have birth control or abortion and neither do Christian fundamentalists or Catholics or right-wing politicians. So who are the ones oppressing women? In this case it's mostly so they can have more followers and slaves. Again it's religion that oppresses the masses.
Religion may oppress the masses, but only if the masses consent to being oppressed, at least in the western world. In other parts of the world---rebel against oppression and punishment can be swift and harsh,
