Wolves are making a successful comeback in the northwest as well! The gray wolf was nearly extinct in North America, and practically completely extinct in the US. But recovery efforts that began in the late 1990s have been very successful thus far The Department of Fish and Wildlife have been tracking numerous wolves they gave tracking collars to over in Idaho near the snake river. But one of these wolves, code name: OR-7, has abandoned the pack to travel alone in 2011. And travel he did! He made it as far south Mount Lassen. This is the first time CA has had a documented wolf sighting since 1924! You can read more about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OR-7 And in even better news, biologists have discovered that OR-7 has found an un-collared female mate, and they now have pups! http://www.kgw.com/news/OR-7-has-wolf-pups-in-Rogue-River-Siskiyou-261842831.html
I stand corrected: OR-7 is currently in Oregon less than 50 miles north of California, where he and the puppies exist. But he roamed through California in the last year. Nobody knows where the female came from, but they suspect she came strayed away from her pack in northern Idaho and traveled the same routes as OR-7. Even better news is that scientists believe there could be up to 4-6 puppies! Even though only 2 were photographed. They say wolf populations are growing back faster than they expected!
