I never heard of reddit before a couple of day ago. Some of the groups seemed to align with my lifestyle so I decided to give the platform a try. Wow... what an eye opening experience.
How so? I mean, what was so eye opening? -- Oh the major assholes..? Sorry a bit slow on the uptake tonight.
Social media was a mistake. I wouldn't care much, if it weren't for the fact that these people are now able to organize via SocMed platforms and possibly sway voting results to their liking, even in some critically important elections. Such as when you choose the next president. This is too much power for a bunch of uneducated oafs, who just want to hate and wreak havoc.
Hate is the appropriate word. When I had to explain to my exhusband about the relationship me and our son were having... I expected an explosion of anger but instead just got told that he didn't support it but we're both adults. On the other hand, the Internet has gone full psycho on me and I'm thankful that I don't use my real name anywhere.
So true, other than professional sites, such as medical and architectural, where you need experience and qualifications, along with a nomination to become a member, HF is one of the few decent sites on the planet, largely due to Skip and his band of helpers. The public medical sites, where anyone can post a reply should be taken down, unless replies are moderated by a doctor. On one such site, started to help drug addicts clean up, discussions moved on to prescription drugs, while this was fine for people addicted to analgesics and antidepressants, in the case of some medication it could be lethal. When a guy asked about weaning off anticoagulants that made him feel low following TAVI, transcatheter aortic valve implant procedure, he received a lot of support. When I explained that they were to prevent the capillaries feeding blood from the aortic junction to the heart muscles degenerating and that he would feel better for few weeks, then not wake up one morning, the idiotic abusive replies were unbelievable. Fortunately, today, TAVI valves have an expanding titanium cage that protect the junction. These reduce the need for anticoagulants to 75mg of Aspirin per day. The internet regulator took the site down a few weeks later.
Yes, you shouldn't. Anonymity is essential on the Internet, and often your only protection against what could turn into some really vicious attacks.
Forums are not that active much these days, so consider yourself lucky if you find one that has some people contributing. I generally feel as if social media is the root cause of message boards dying down. People decided they wanted everything in one place. So that is what Twitter and Facebook can provide. But boo-hoo. Forums just look way cooler. At least in my opinion.
I used to have an account on Reddit and it seemed like I got attacked on there a lot. From trolls mainly. I ended up canceling my account. I'm only sticking to Forums now.
It takes a lot of close moderation to keep the jerks and trolls away, but it's worth it. Sad that Musk doesn't understand that.
