Their rainbowy premise may be flawed, but I don't think you should feel bad about going, sure, some people will drive out an SUV... and SUV's are not evil, misusing them is. The gathering will leave considerably smaller damage than if 30k people go to walmart.... For one, there's no walmart left behind after a rainbow family gathering ;)

The reason I don't think I would go, personally, is the people I keep seeing on here, bitching about cameras and people sending out negative vibes... Only negative vibes I'm seeing are from rainbow family peeps, the rest is just being bounced back at them :2thumbsup:

I find "real" hippies don't concern themselves with such labels.

oh I agree, I don't really have anything against the gatherings in and of themselves. I live in the suburbs, I drive a car, I use my car to get out of the suburbs and into the forest or the city all the time so I don't think theres anything inherently wrong with the gatherings. Its more that the very name of them - the Rainbow Family- implies that they are greater than they actually are. Most Rainbows don't even know the origin of their name if you try to talk to them about it.

I don't know what I'm talking about to be honest. I think I'm just arguing semantics.

Well there's nothing wrong with arguing semantics, I find them to be rather important.

But I guess if you can ignore the semantics and douchebags, they're probably fun gatherings.

However, some of the rainbow peeps do seem to have a rather annoying capacity for hypocritical or misguided aggression. Nothing wrong with aggression, it's got a place, but they don't seem to know where to point it, from what I've seen on these boards.

If I can convince some friends to go, I might well go to one (or more, depending on how I feel about that one) in the future, and see how I feel about it. But first I have to deal with a lot of shit that's currently on my plate. So, no finial judgement on them from me.

    I've enjoyed many Rainbow Gatherings.

And I find the same thing at Gatherings that I find at most places- 10% of the people are why I'm there. Go to a party, go to a Rainbow Gathering, go to a concert, a squat, a bar, a business meeting- in general 10% of the people I really enjoy. You just have to find those 10%.

I enjoy going to a Rainbow Gathering and finding a cool kitchen to work with. I enjoy 'working' at a gathering, chopping wood, tending the cooking fires, making food. I've made some really good friends at Gatherings.

But yea there are some REALLY ANNOYING hippies out there.

Right on man, Turtle Soup has always been my favorite kitchen. Great vegan grunts. At the rainbow I enjoy 95%, and find only 5% are fukwits.

That's the part I find a little ironic. It is just a vacation, not a way of life.

    Why?

It doesn't seem any different than a Woodstock type festival. People all gather together, get high and dance for a few weeks, then go home, back to their lives.

    @rjhangover

Do you remember the Buffalo Soldiers? Do you remember what they were put in charge of? Rounding up Indians and putting them on reservations.

Do you also remember the promise of 40 acres and a mule? Actually the promise was 40 acres a mule and 2 American Indian Slaves. The only problem with that deal is that American Indians hated being slaves more than Blacks did and knew the lay of the land better than the Black Slaves. And freed slaves still signed up to get the slaves of their own.

When you talk about "Honkeys" and all of the evil they have done you focus on only one group of people and dismiss their ways as evil. Not all tribes of American Indian were peaceful and tribal wars were brutal before the white man came. The Europeans exploited tribal wars in both what came to be known as "The United States" and Africa. Alot of the slave trade came from one warring tribe selling prisoners from another warring tribe to the Europeans. A big part of the reason the big land grab went down was that there were tribes over here that were complicit and wanted nothing more than to get one over on the tribe that they had been warring with for generations.

I'm lost. It seems like some people have a negative opinion about the gatherings, but some do not. Can some of the people who think poorly of it give me their opinion as to why its not that great?

Gatherings are full of people. Most of them suck. It's just like life. You need to find the cool people. Find a kitchen. Hang out. Make some friends. Cook some food. Learn some stuff. You'll have a good time.

    agree with rev jc btw

native americans sure got a raw deal though. I don't think that there is the awareness of what went on that there should be though. and poverty on many of the reservations is largely out of site, out of mind

I personally think it is stupid to slap labels on yourself such as " (real) hippie", "yuppie", "punk", what have you. We are all amalgamations of much more than one subculture as human beings, and fixating on a single definition for the self is soul-crushing, imho...

The reason for this thread was to turn hippies on to a very cool space. Most were offended, thinking I was insinuating that if you don't go to the Rainbow you're not a REAL hippie. To be clear, it has NOTHING to do with labeling anyone. I DO think it is very important to defend our right to ASSEMBLE. I AM very disappointed in my government. I feel the government has raped the Native Americans, blacks, and recently Iraqis and Afghans, killing over a million innocent civilians. And putting a $14 trillion national debt on the backs of future generations while giving tax cuts to billionaires is beyond criminal. Congress has stolen $2.4 trillion from the Social Security fund in the last 25 years, and now they want to destroy it so they don't have to pay it back. They also want to destroy Medicaid and Medicare, in essence throwing the elderly and the poor on the trash heap. I'm ashamed of my own whiteness.
