IF you use wax, the dreading process can't happen. You see, wax just goops the hair together...it doesn't knot it, which is what dreads are (lots of knots!)...wax actually hinders the dreading process and can potentially make your hair moldy and smelly.

Your hair will dread on its own with time...be patient...that's one thing you have to learn when you start dreads.

    Thank you for answering.. :)

    -| will not use wax.

    | will wait "long time"- |'ll just have to keep reminding myself that everything takes time. Some things just may take longer then others.

Hey all!! my names Shaun but everyone calls me Shauno :p I was just wondering where the hell do i start with dreads!? the past few weeks ive been reading different sites and ive been getting different results from every single one of them.... But this place seemed like there was some awsome people who can help me out :p... My hair is about 3 inches (little bit over 8cm actually) at the moment... so im guessing i need to grow it a bit longer? anything else i should also do? should i stop putting hair spray etc in my hair and let it do its own thing for now? (i usually do my hair up when i go out). Any help is very much appreciated :)

    Thanks :)

    For the zillionth time.

Stop brushing, stop conditioning, stop touching your hair...and your hair will dread naturally...no matter how short or long.

i havnt really washed my hair in 1 month anyways lol... i found it looked better cause it would go all frizzy if i washed it... after my shower... ive been just patting my hair with the towel instead of fully drying it... so it dries by itself... also 1 more thing and ill stop bugging use :p would wearing a normal hat/baseball cap.. have any effects on the process? eg sweat might make it greasy etc?? thanks heaps so far :) <3 yas already :p

I wasn't trying to be rude, but a lot of people ask these questions, so you can find the answer if you look through threads. :)

Anyway, if you're going to wear a hat, I'd recommend a wool or fleece hat...Oddly enough, it helps the dreading process. As far as a baseball cap, I wouldn't recommend it...simply because it doesn't allow your hair to move and knot up.

hmm ok thanks... ill just not wear anything on my head :p... I was looking in the phone book today and i came aross a salon that does dreadlocks... i rang them up and they said they can do it for me if i grow my hair to 5 inches... it will cost me about AU$50 an hour... so i was thinking of doing that :)

Hey, one thing about that salon thing. Be really careful, because sometimes they won't even dread your hair. They'll just twist it up extremely tight, put some gunk on the "twists", and deem them, "dreadlocks." They don't last. Make sure they do some sort of back-combing.

Good luck man! And have fun!

You don't have to get it "done". Just by stopping combing your hair and conditioning, hair will dread on its own.

The dreading process takes patience and a sense of humility...

Even if you backcomb, your baby dreads will look crappy...guaranteed...but it's all part of the process...

Thanks Annie! That was kinda encouraging..

    |'ve just got my dreads.. well, they do look pretty messy, but | like `em. Anyway, people are already exclaming/asking me, "ohhh! I love your braids!" And |'ll kinda look at the person and say bluntly, "they're actually dreadlocks." When | say that the person's face will kinda fall, and then they'll get this slightly alarmed expression on their face and ask, "did you use peanut-butter??!!" " *Laughs* Uh... no. | back-combed."

Yeah. | get these strange looks all the time. But what the heck.

my dreads are almost a month old. The botton and roots are all dready, but the middle part is still rebelling. I've been using Dr. Bronnors' 18 in 1 hemp soap, which is amazing. I suggest using it if you have/are trying to get dreads. It has made my dreads pretty solid and made them form pretty fast.

hi there , i realy need a question answering.
i got dreadlock 'extentions' done a while ago and found it really uncomfortable to sleep and had to take them out ... luckily they were just, as i said, extentions meanign that my actual hair did not get damaged.
here is the question..i am thinking of getting proper dreadlocks done now and have booked to have them done. In your opinions should i go ahead with it or will i have the same sleeping difficulty with natural dreads as with the synthetic ones.
i think the synthetic ones were so difficult to sleep on because of beign so hard and non plyable.
    please help.
    peace x

    Hi everyone!

I've browed this thread for a bit, and didn't really seem to find the information that I was looking for, but if I've skipped it, then please forgive me.

Anyway, I've got a question about the wax for dreads. It seems that a lot of people don't want to use it, and thats kind of making me a bit nervous. I havn't got my dreads in yet; I've got a couple of weeks still before my school is out. They should be locked up a good bit by the time school is in so they won't look too funky. Anyway, theres all these dreadlock wax products out there, and available anywhere, but is it really necessary? Can I just use regular beeswax, from a whole-foods store or from a local bee farmer? I'm talking about natural beeswax, with nothing or very little added to it, or do I need to find something created specially for dreads? Any info would really help.

    Thanks in advance!

    Anna

Do not use WAX! Any kind of wax...will goop up hte hair and not allow the hair to knot, which is what dreads really ARE.

You also don't need to go to the salon to get your dreads done, in fact, most people will say you shouldn't do it at all, because they give you "fake" dreads that will come undone. Meaning, the hairstylist will twist them and put wax in them so they LOOK like dreads...only there are no knots, therefore, there are no locks.

Dreaded hair can get hard. My boyfriend has had his dreads for almost five years and his are hard, but to touch them they are soft feeling...

I don't have a problem with my dreads because I've become accustomed to the feeling of having them, as I did them the natural way. That means no backcombing or salon dreads...they evolved on their own, so my head got used to sleeping on them.
