Oh, another trick is to smudge your locks with insence or sage...love nag champa for this-it lasts forever and covers up pretty much every bad smell there is.

    Yup.
Now that i think abot it, Febreeze is silly. It says not to spray near kids or animals so I think that's an obvious sign not to use it daily.
    Darn rumors!

i can't be bothered reading through to find out where, but anyone using Fabreeze in their dreads is uhmm...

You shouldn't put Fabreeze anywhere, let alone near your hair.

Hey guys, im new to dreads.. Ive been putting them in over about 3 months. My hair is short and very uneven so ive been dreading sections of it once it gets around 3 inches, the longest is now about 10" though ive still got some loose hair at the back which is too short to dread.

Anyway ive made them by backcombing and securing them with bands for a week or so. I had some problems with the roots being very lose and trying to join up with the lose hairs which i did want as i want to keep them pretty small (aiming for about 40 dreads). So i picked up some wooden beads with 6mm holes at the local market and ive pushed on onto almost every dread, right at the top... it seems to be working realy well and encouraging the hairs to come together at the root.. the ones old enough to have 'new' hair come out the other side of the bead are really nice an matted and round.

Is it fine to carry on doing this? Its obviously better than elastic bands but still not really natural.. but seems to be working.

Haha ok I know this was like page 63 of this thread BUT it is a problem I am
    considering!!

I have sewn together a few dreads on the top of my head, because before
they were too thin. Atm, they aren't looking like the rest of my dreads at all!!
I have some beasty ones at the back of my head and some cute little tight
ones at the sides but these sewn-together-crappy ones just look, sewn
together!! ive tried taking the thread out (because its a gold colour, eurgh
xD, and also because its anoying the hell out of me). I should put a pic up
really, I might do that actually ^^

But yea, The sewn together ones just look like half matted hair.. WELL I guess you could say they look as shit as two small dreads sewn together in a
    desperate attempt!!

    *sigh*

Back to the point... Shall I undread them, then dread them again? It's effort
I'm willing to take (even though my patience is non-existent), because the
ones at the back of my head look awesome!! *sigh* If only i left them
alooonee.... (haha re-thinking this sentance, I sound hypocritical xD But I'm
only undoing the damage I did!!)

    (...God I sound crazy..)

Any advice would be awesome, and sorry for the long post!!

;D (btw xD I've had my dreads for 7/8 months and can't remember when i stupidly sewed the few together :D )

Edit: Pics up in album called "Dreads", Thoughts on re-doing the sectioning on the top dreads?

    Leave your hair alone.

After you do that for a few years, you will have dreads.

The only thing you should be doing to it is washing, and MAYBE separating bigger congos.

dragonvine, i have a few that are oddly shaped, some i tampered with, others i didn't. it should work itself out.

if you can get the thread out you might as well. the locks should be holding themselves together by now.

    things look fine btw.

I have some out of shape ones too but they are the ones I just left alone: the ones I'm moaning about I've crocheted largeish chunks of straight hair and its gone all curly, or the crocheted bits are coming out- shall i just leave it then? They aren't how they used to be, they aren't proper dreads... Its hard to describe xD When I feel them they feel like they have 3 or 4 different small dreads in them, if you get what I mean..

And the roots are all silly shapes xD

Ahh well, they look *ookkkk* I guess... I've undone one and re-done it just to rest my mind xD

*Sigh* I'll leave em xD Couldn't stand to have standy-up dreads again anyway!!

    Cheers :D

hey there fellow dreaders. so, got mine done about a month ago, they're coming along quite nicely, i think. no elastics by the roots, just some in the tips. palm rolling is pretty much the only thing i've been doing to em. is there anything else to help get em locked up tightly that i should be doin? or is this just a time thing. wait..wait....wait some more. any tips on cleaning, encouraging, and maintaining is greatly appreciated. kudos to you all

get the elastics out of your hair. try a seasalt spray and see how you like it. hair doesnt like to be roughed up and forced to do things. be gentle if you palm roll

thanks again, glacius. seasalt spray it is. i did hear salt water made em tighten up a bit, just didn't know if you could do that too soon or not. i'll give it a try on a few and see how it goes. i guess i'll look online for local stores that sell it? or is there an online retailer you suggest? i took all the elastics outta my roots yesterday, and i think they already look better. i'll do the tips this day after work. should have some pics up soon, not the best camera though.

you can find sea salt in a lot of places. just mix that with water and use it on your hair. its easier if you have a spray bottle though so you can apply at your leisure then rinse out when you feel the need to. if walmart or some general stores dont have it, try picking up a phone book and call up some health food places, or places that special in selling herbal health products.

    Hey all,
had my babies about 2 days so im very new.
ive been told not to wash my hair yet as it mite fuck up the dreads iv had crocheted in, but i dont want my scalp to go all shitty and horrible and iv been reading thru and tee tree oil of sea salt appears to be the best thing, but will it clog my hair up too much if i dont wash it for a few weeks to let them sort themselves out? how can i stop my scalp being all itchy if i shoodnt put anythin on my hair?
    thanks :)
