i used them loosely, just tied them up with soem string and dropped them into the pot. I forgot to add that I cut up a bulb of ginger and threw that in to. I did strain it a bit, but didn't have to to much. I should think that a tea bulb and any herb combination that you have dried or otherwise would work pretty well to.

and in regards to your hair and the towel wrap, nah dred, not you. You got the motherlode of hair and would definitely topple over ;-)

    Peace to all

does rubbing a towel in a circular motion after you get out of the shower encourage hair to knot up?

any rubbing in any direction will but dont overdo it
too much rubbiung can weaken dreads
just rub as u normaly would to get dry

with baking soda being a base and acv or lemon juice being acidic, dont they neutralize each other when put together in the deep cleanse?

    good question
i stopped using the lemmon juice in mine
but usualy u just use a lil lemmon and alot more baking so id imagine the lemon would be neutrilaxzrd while the baking sida still has plenty of power

nut thats a guess i never thiught bout it from a chemistry level
i just threw stuff ina pitcher and dumped it over my head

i figure ill just leave out the lemon as i have dark hair anyways, and use vinegar to rinse out the deep cleanse, that way it will neutralize the baking soda after its done its job and keep it from burning my scalp.

hey dreadies, and people who like dreads, and people who know about dreads, and people just browsing? and people maybe reading this off google!

I had a head with dreads before, but i was not digging what was going on and im sure wax had something to do with that. now im a couple of years wiser and want to do things the right way! i kept my old dreads to remind me of things, like how i shouldn't mess around, or how i loved my dreads or that people often were freaked out by them.

ive got long black (or maybe dark brown?) really thick and very curly hair. i used shampoo and conditioner everday up until a week or two ago and now because of you guys ive learned that that stuff is bad for you anyway. if I could, id live like a caveman but society is going to give me a hard time and im just not ready for that yet.

so basically ive got a couple of dready friends to help section my hair and backcomb it for me (so i have more dread-looking things sooner) and i want to have it done within the next week or two.

what i need from you is some info, ill be looking around too, to see if i can answer some of these things myself but its a lot of stuff to sift through

    i need to know

what i should do to my hair or with my hair from now up until i get my buddies to work on it

how should i sleep with my hair

things i should start using in my hair to replace shampoo or conditioner

anything i should use after its backcombed

    and anything i missed

im ready to take the journey and im confident i have the patience for my head. i tackled the beast before but thanks to certain circumstances that didn't work out to well for me

yhtow away your comb switch to a non residue soap like dr bronners (dilutre it 12-1) adctualy b4 u do that do a deep cleanse..baking soda to remove buildup
    do a sea salt spray
tuck your hair up in a wool hat at night
in the morning seperate any sections that begin forming
in a few weeks check progress and then decide if theres any reason to backcomb or not

if u backcomb do it once only
then let em do theyre thing

but i bet if u jusyt start the natural route in a few weeks you'll decide not to backcomb

first, i do a deep clean, like this? http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=303589&f=209

second, i go to sleep tonight with a wool hat

third, i wake up and separate sections? so I undread hair that is trying to dread, or am I trying to keep sections of hair from running into eachother?

four, before i jump in the shower, I spray my hair with sea salt? how often should i do this?

five, get this dr bronners shampoo, get 12 parts water and 1 part dr bronner and use it like shampoo? how often should I shampoo, is there guidelines, or is it entirely personal preference?

okay, sweet information thanks so much!

is this everything I need to know? I was thinking if I stick beads near the roots of my hair it could help keep the hair from chunking together in a huge mess throughout the day. or would that restrict the hair too much making it harder to dread? would wearing the wool hat when my hair is dry throughout the day help too?

you do not want to put the hat on on wet haittr wait till its dry and yea u can wear it all the time
the sea salt u can doi whenever but wouldnt leave it in too long it can iritate the scalp
wash whenever u feel like it
    once a weeks usualy good
but mamny wash more or less often depends how you feel
weekly is a good average tho

when i said seperate em no u dont wantto tear apart forming dreads, just feel foer clumps that are sectioning and clumping together then seperate 1 from another so they dont combine
if u find sections that seem too big then yea try to seperate em into smaller
98% of the work they'll do themselves
all u gotta dop is keep em clean and keep the process from running wild and becomming a unidread

hahaha i find it funny that ppl need typed out instrictions on how to dread...
when i started mine this was all i knew about dreads
stop combing and dreads happen...pure simplicity
that 1 step process was all i needed

    hey all! first post here!

been lurking around for a while, but finally decided to make it through. lovin' all the pix and advice you guys give out, maybe you could send some my way!

so im pretty much bald (i get a haircut 3 times a month) + lined up (think rappers like ludacris). im filipino, so get straight, black hair. ive actually had shoulder length hair a couple years ago, and want to get it back there.

my plan is to grow it out a few inches... then section it + backcomb one time and then let it go wild. what do you folks think?

    :D

i think while uou grow it longenough to backcomb you should simply stop combing and start using residue free soap
chances are by the time u got enough hair to backcomb you'll have dreads started
straight filipino hair will dread just fone naturaly

thanks for the advice, i knew you'd come through haha.

i thought of the same, i really dont like the idea of having dreads that are backcombed and are only an inch or two long. might as well just grow it out natrually with the hair already longer.

so, time to start lettin' it go

Hey guys, I'm sure there's a bit of info on this already, but I got lots goin on and not a lot of spare time. So I'll just get to it.

My hairs been locking for about 4 months now, and doing well, but I have an issue. Its loopin out the sides like crazy. I have done nothing, but let it be and separate. It's looping at all lengths of the dreads and no amount of palm rolling is helping that. I have started crocheting a bit at the ends as it starts to loop out, but will the ones up higher ever get in line???

If not, oh well, I can live with that. Next question, is it to early to throw some beads here and there? Will it hinder the locking process?? I had thought about using them to help hold down and cover the loops.

Thanks in advance for all your wisdom and help.
    Peace

palm rolling is a waste of time and can even dammage hair and lead to breakage
loops are part of the pricess and will tighten up eventualy
u can put beads in anytime my dreads were started just by sticking a few beads in undreaded hair
i dont recommend crochetting at all
its yoiur choice if u want to but it causes dammage, bad dammage that weakens dreads also it causes the dread to look and feel different where u crochetted
it breaks hairs so more hairs pop out needing to be crochetted more to pull em in and once u start u gotta keep fdoing it for lufe unle4ss u want there to be a distinct difference between the crochetted and the natural new growth

best advice is just leave em be the loops 3will go away in time

Ya, I was wonderin about the whole crocheting thing, luckily I only did it in a couple places and nothing to extreme.

It's a deal! I will leave em be, I promise!
    Thank you!
