Something like crochet, than the backcombing, apparently wax is no good, and dreadperm? Which is the best way to go, im completely flustered and have no idea what t o d o. uhhh.. completely newbie question but...

i got me some dr. bronner's soap... peppermint (they ran out of tea tree D=)

so i remember that i needed to dilute it but...
when i actually got to it i had no idea what to do! ~_~
so i like got a bucket, filled it some, squirted some in twice...
    and dunked my head in
after trying to figure out if this was right or not, i just started washing myself with the diluted liquid i've created....
my body felt all minty ^_^ it was fun
but i need to know how to actually do this lol
    someone help me out?

mold happens when your dreads dont dry out completey between washes or wettings. all you need to do to prevent it is make sure they dry out. if you want to take extra percautions, get some tea tree soap to wash with, tea tree is a very effective anti-fungal.

i was wondering: i've had dreads before, but had to brush them out (took FOREVER) when you first get them done i've heard you shouldn't wash them for about 5 days. is this true? or is it ok to wash them?

its fine to wash them. some people like to leave them for a bit and let them tighten and relax a little, but its not necessary and if you have an oily scalp it can slow the process down. i waited almost i month i believe before i washed mine, but you can wash them right away if you like. keep in mind that they will fall out a little (or a lot) during washing no matter what.

I have a hard time to get my dreads dry when i'm out of the shower and I also prefer not to use a blowdryer since I did this before and back than I had the feeling like it did no good to my hair, so does anyone have any tips for me to get my dreads dry properly...

hm... how old are they, and how tight? if they're still kind of squishy you can try wrapping them in a towel for about 20 minutes, then take a fresh towel and do the same again. or dance around for a while, or go out in the sunshine til they dry. that way they smell good too. I never had any problem getting them dry, and they were really thick and tight... I just let them air dry. didn't take more than... okay, 8 hours. but since there was no hurry, no problem :) I'd say a hairdryer is actually fine, although it makes everything kind of poofy.

Hi guys =) my dreads are about 2-3 weeks old and im wondering about showering them... i shower them with knottyboys shampoo once a week and it has worked out just fine... but yesterday i washed them again and the tips fell out pretty much, bout 2-3 centimeters ( my dreads arebout 12-13 so its alot for me =/ ).

And i got loose hairs in the back so it looks like a birdnest instead of dreads haha :p

Am i wrong when i suspect time will solve theese problems out?
Can i do anything tomake it better?

Thank you :) and sorry about my english its not my natural language =)

maybe your dad doesn't like dreads? do you use a soap or just hot water? and did you use wax at the beginning? if so, soap has a way of collecting at the centre of the locks, don't know exactly why but it gets stuck in there with wax. and I believe they take a lot longer to dry if there's wax.

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has used Kirk's Castile soap to wash their dreads before? It says no dry residue but I'm not really sure if that's completely residue free. Thanks in advance =]

then maybe that's it :) don't know exactly how to help you, but maybe try the deep cleaning concoction listed somewhere in this forum, on a warm day, and then let your hair dry well in the sun. that did it for me. good luck!

My daughter's been begging me for a while to let her get dreadlocks. To me though they've always seemed kind of dirty and smelly (I'm sorry, I don't mean that to be rude, I'm just naturally conservative) and have been doing my best to put her off the idea.

Given that she's been on at me for ages now, she seems commited to it, so what has she got to do to get them started, look after them, and keep them clear?

just keep them clean and free of residue
dont use any rubber bands or wax or anything,
    use only natural soaps
something like dr bronners diluted, or just baking soda type deep cleanning stuff (search through here theres many good threads about keeping them clean)

alot of parents tend to fall for the whole trap of salons=better looking dreads myth and causing that smelly messy dread image to persist
they inist on trying to make them look the best they can immediately, and using bad products to try to tame the process
all u can do is accept that they'll loook bad before they look good, and the more u try to control that the more you'll have probs in the future
