people, people.... We may all hold different nationalities and belong to different cultures, but we are still all human. We should be fully able to respect other cultures and encourage diversity while protecting ourselves and improving the human condition. The goal is to help. We can encourage respect of the traditions and cultures that make us special and diverse while rooting out those actions that cause us suffering.
Stoney69 - is stoning women to death islamic? I think not. I'd like to thank catstevens for enlightening me a lot as to what Islam is and Isn't.
The UN seems like a good place to start. You're argument that we shouldn't be interfering in other cultures falls flat on my ears. If that was African culture, I would say it was inferior, and it needs to change. However, it is not African culture. Africa has a rich cultural tapastry, and just because a few sadistic patriarchs aren't willing to enforce laws meant to protect the people of Nigeria, doesn't mean that murdering raped women is Nigerias culture. Saying otherwise is grotesque. I don't even see how you can say otherwise? How can you argue even if this is their cuture *which it is NOT*... that this institution is worth preserving? You must have gone to college, because thats the only way I could see someone saying something so ignorant as everyones culture is equal, even if it involves public murdering of raped women. That is not Nigeria's culture, that is culture being forced on them. Sera Michelle's right, we can preserve the rich culture of Nigeria and other places, while still offering support from the UN through the African Union to help stop these horrific acts.
Wow, what an assault on somebody's views... EVERYBODY has the unconditional right to tell everyone else what they see as right and wrong; it's called an opinion. What I see as wrong, is humans inflicting suffering upon any other aspect of nature. However, it is a paradox in that I see that it is right for humans to take what they need to survive and prosper as a symbiotic society on this planet. We are forced to harm certain portions of life in order to continue to exist; in turn, we need to sacrifice certain portions of our lives... Right now, just about all of humanity is essentially a disease; we are so lethal, that we even kill memebers of our own species. It has to stop.
