    Legal bite follows mauling

Pair attacked by tiger charged with trespassing; both men were drinking, police say

    Katherine O'Neill
Edmonton — From Saturday's Globe and Mail Published on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 12:41AM EDT Last updated on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 4:17AM EDT

Two men who were clawed and bitten by a young Siberian tiger after allegedly sneaking into the Calgary Zoo early Monday have been charged with trespassing.
Calgary Police acting Staff Sergeant Rick Halford said the men, both 27, had been drinking prior to the incident.
“What their state of mind was, before that, during that, we don't know. We do know that they were intent on perhaps surprising somebody at the zoo, but things got a little carried away,” he told reporters yesterday. “Apparently there was a staff member at the zoo they were familiar with.”
Trever James Wearmouth and Thomas Anthony Bryce-Hart escaped criminal charges but were each slapped with one count of petty trespassing.
Staff Sgt. Halford said while neither man entered the tiger exhibit, one came into contact with Vitali, a 150-kilogram, two-year-old tiger, through a fence and suffered “significant” injuries to his arms. The other man received minor injuries while attempting to pull his friend to safety.
He said privacy laws prevent police from identifying which person was seriously hurt in the confrontation with Vitali or updating his medical condition.
Four security personnel were patrolling the 32-hectare zoo grounds when the men, both Calgary residents, somehow slipped undetected past a 2.4-metre fence fixed with barbed wire.
A video camera near a main gate captured an image of one man at 1:03 a.m. From there, the pair walked nine metres to the tiger enclosure, which houses Vitali, who was in the main outdoor yard, as well as two adult females, who were inside a building.
One man hopped a metre-high fence designed to keep people away from the main tiger barrier. He approached the 4.5-metre-high mesh fence, which has an overhang at the top as well as a 120-volt charge. But the fence has openings large enough for a person to put an arm in – or for a tiger to stick its paw out.
The men called the staff member they knew for help after the confrontation. She contacted 911 and paramedics arrived at 1:13 a.m. One man was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Staff Sgt. Halford said the staff member wasn't aware of what the men were doing and won't be charged.
Ron Tilson, who has been working with tigers for 27 years and is the conservation director at the Minnesota Zoo, told The Globe and Mail earlier this week that the only explanation for the men's “stupid” behaviour was that they were likely “on something more than bravado.”
Staff Sgt. Halford said the attack will likely serve as a “big enough deterrent” to others considering copying the pair's crime. “Again, human nature is such that we can't predict that,” he added.
In the meantime, the Calgary Zoo is probing whether it needs to beef up its security.
“There is no indication that the zoo was at fault here,” said Laurie Herron, a zoo spokeswoman.
With a report from Dawn Walton in Calgary

My grandma died this spring and a big part of cultural heritage left away with her. She was armenian, was speaking the language and had tons of traditional recipes and all. Hopefully she teached me some while she was still alive, but most of them are unknown to me and now I crave some. I'd trade my soul right now against a plate of home-made baklavas. Buying some won't work, the ones they sell at groceries are crap. My grandma's baklavas were kick-ass. What am I supposed to do? :(

I'm looking for a new place to live and didn't find anything decent yet. I still have a month and half to find something but I sincerely hate the whole apartment search thing. Argh!
