I used to like making furniture...when I had a decent shop setup. What kind of piece are you finishing right now?

I'm on my own for the next week, starting tomorrow morning. I'm not sure how I'll like it, but it should be relaxing anyway.

It's a door with raised panels. What kind of furniture did you make?

Nice - are we talking front house door?

Well, I drew up a lot of plans that I never actually executed...but I did make four 4' h x 6' l x 11" d shelf units for my kids. I also made a kitchen counter-height butcher-block-top table that I felt pretty good about. I used Douglas Fir for the legs and maple for the rails, made all the corners 3/8" round with a router, and it looks pretty sharp.

I did major repair work on a few pieces that we bought - my stepdaughter trashed a dresser that used flimsy plastic slides for the drawers. I cut all new slides out of oak. And a few other smaller projects...spare time stuff, but it gave me a feeling of accomplishment.

I just posted a whole bunch of pictures of the turtles, ducks and squirrels I feed. If you'd like you can look at them when you have the time.

Yeah, how do you get into a pool without a deck? Pole-vault?

Yep, front door. That table sounds cool. I have an order for one similar to that, but I've never made a butcher-block-top before so I'll see how that turns out.

I've used oak slides for drawers before too. Drawers can be pretty tricky.

My confession on the butcher-block top: I bought a 4' x 18" x 1-1/2" butcher block top already made, so I just had to route the edges and then make and attach the leg assembly. ;) I think making one from scratch would be a challenge.

Is that how you make a living? In my early days, after I got a stinkin college degree and ended up in a crummy lab injecting and bleeding mice for a living, I started thinking about trying to get into cabinet- and furniture-making. I still kind of think I would have liked that if I could make a go of it.

I would probably buy one too, but the customer wants a special wood. It does save a lot of time not having to laminate.

Yeah, I do it full time. I just go to shows and have a website to take orders plus word of mouth.

Some of the shows are cheap so it isn't that much risk if you want test the waters a bit.

Interesting thought...I haven't thought about this stuff in a long time, but I'm remembering now how much I enjoyed it...maybe as a spare-time business...if I could manage to do the immense amount of work it would take to set up a decent shop in our current home...

Ah yes, that would be the bite of the equine tuberculosis-carrying mosquito. Blisters eventually change to oozing pustules. Luckily however, gangrene may be prevented by half-hourly ingestion of 2 oz. of vodka.
