I'm awake early to meet a guy who is buying a fish tank from me. I am not in the appropriate clothing or mindset for moving a massive tank right now. Dammit!

Ha! Finally got it moved and gone. The guy was prepared and it went easier than I expected. He came with an appliance van with a lift and an appliance dolly. I'm going to miss that tank though. :(

how big was it and what did you keep?
I was just considering starting a thread about keeping fish.
I admit to being an aquaholic.

I started a fish thread a long time ago but I don't know if it made the trip to the new board. The tank I sold today was a 160 gallon tank. So it's a decent size but nowhere as big as the 360g I sold a couple of years ago. That was huge and very hard to sell. But I've had all kinds of fish. I prefer the larger fish. Some of my favorites over the years have been my eels, gars, sting rays, clown knifes...to name a few. Sting rays are awesome but they are a lot of work and most people shouldn't have them.....even if the tiny ones look really cute in the fish store and the employee tells you that you can keep them in your 30 gallon community tank.

    Cool.
Never had tanks that size, my biggest is 80 gallons. I've been keeping fish for over 40 years, I lean towards planted tanks with tetras and similar small fish, and of course saltwater.
The biggest critter I ever kept was a nurse shark that got orphaned at the store I was managing at the time. I kept him for around six months while we found him a new home. When I first got him he was about 30", when I had to take him out of the tank he was over 36". We eventually made arrangements through our fish wholesaler for him to go to a public aquarium in Tokyo where I understand he enjoyed a good life. That was around 1983.
He was pretty cool, I would feed him by hand and he totally loved having his back scratched like a puppy.

Now I have a 30 gallon saltwater tank (soon to be upgraded to a 50), a 10 gallon salt and 10 gallon planted fresh.

the 80 is sitting empty right now, probably going to go with a south american themed tank, schools of little guys and discus/angels.

Nice tanks! Cool shark story too. I've never had a shark but I'd love to. I probably won't ever get one though just for that same reason....what do I do with him when he grows too big for him environment? That's a problem with stingrays too. I was lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of water who kept rays exclusively. But if I didn't find him...who knows what I would have had to do because I don't know anyone with more water than me or with the knowledge to keep them alive.

It's too bad you don't live near me. I'd unload some serious water space on you for cheap! I now have 2 tanks gone and 4 to go and then 2 that I'm keeping for now. I'm planning on staying at my house until our daughter graduates from high school (since it's right down the block) and then moving. One thing we will consider when choosing a new house is available space for a huge tank build. Hopefully in the ballpark of 2000-4000 gallons. I think the size will end up being dictated by how big of a sump I can build though. If I want to be at about 25% capacity on the sump...that's a lot of space. Might have to scale back quite a bit. I haven't decided if I want to go big on the fish or make it a planted tank with a shitload of small fish. That could be pretty sweet!

And I should say....I say I want to build that tank but lot's of people say that. The vast majority never get it done so I'm keeping that in mind. I may be a statistic. :)

I don't have the facilities for tropical's anymore and when I did had to keep it to 40 long because of my transient lifestyle. Couldn't travel with and handle anything larger on my own.

plywood and fiberglass would get the job done. The biggest thing would be the viewing pane, glass would be heavy as fuck and acrylic would cost a small fortune.
you know how friggin' big a 4000 gallon tank would be.
    a tank 20'Lx4'Wx3'D is only ~1800 gallons.
How big are you thinking in actual area?

shit if you build a 4000 gallon tank, you could charge admission to check it out. LOL

You could go with those dimensions but it would be better to make it square and deep. But yeah....plywood with one acrylic side. The viewing window doesn't really have to be as large as the wall of the tank. And I just realized that I said "a lot of people say that"....actually a lot of people don't say that at all. But a lot of fish geeks on my fish board say that.
