Yeah...I kind of wondered why you would drool over an ESP but I figured....to each their own. :)

That pick-up is made by Roland to be installed as an after-market addition but I'm pretty sure you can even buy guitars that are made with MIDI pick-ups. On mine, there is a short (6-8 inch) regular guitar cable that plugs into the normal jack on the guitar and the other end plugs into the pick-up. A MIDI cable runs from the pick-up to the synth. On the back of the synth are 3 outputs. There's the left/mono and right output and then "guitar output". This set-up allows you to play only MIDI, only regular signal or a combination of both. So with the flip of a small switch on the pick-up you jump from your regular rig to MIDI and back or use both. If you do that, you might find that you'll have some volume issues that you need to address so everything is at the same volume. But it's pretty fun and I love being able to try to make the guitar sound like a sax, organ or any other of the nearly 400 different sounds. And it has modeling too.

I "drool" over any guitar… The more beat up and challenging the better

Yes that is a good story Moonglo and pretty good correlation I don't say so myself…

Except my guitars don't end up in dump and rescued by a faery

i had the first rolands Gr1 with pick up in the 90s.. another jackass move tossing toys aways.. idk, I just got tired of it, felt more like I was playing with a keyboard making spacey tones and far out sounds rather than playing actual songs.

I would hope they've come a long way since then. There are a lot of seemingly useless effects on the GR-55 too. But you can pick your favorites and put them where you want them for quick access. I was so stoked when I first got it because it was loaded with effects. I eventually realized that out of all those effects....I use maybe 6 or 7 of them on stage and some of those are not very often. But I think it will be a great recording tool and it's helpful to use the looping feature to practice soloing over. One thing about some of the effects...they can be unforgiving if your sloppy. You have to play those pretty clean or they might make noises that you don't want. Some of the others are super forgiving though.

I had the Eleven Rack. It wasnt as complicated and its tones not as much the violin, oboe but rather all the greater guitar tones right there. money problems lead me to take it back. it was over $1000.00 just a little out the price tag for home toys once I played with it for a week.. lol Im good..

The GR-55 lists for maybe $1200-$1300 but I got mine for $800 or so. It does have a lot of great guitar tones and modeling but there is just so much there that it took me a while to go through it and decide what I liked most. Then I would find some that I didn't like that all of the sudden sounded awesome....and vice versa. So one issue is when you are moving things around and trading their "spots"...and you have that many spots to begin with...eventually the list in the manual isn't very helpful because a bunch of stuff isn't where it's listed and you don't remember exactly where you moved it. But I'm leaving a lot out. There is a lot more you can do with each effect...like you can adjust levels on each one, etc. Like I said, it's complicated enough that if you have never used one (and I hadn't) you really have to learn how to use it and then play it.

I had a very early MIDI guitar... It was a Charvel when I got it, pickup was in the bridge. System was made by "Shadow". I moved the trem bridge and circuitboard over to one of my handbuilt guitars. The unit just created a MIDI signal, You had to use a synth module for sounds. I had a volume pedal wired to fade from Guitar to Synth.

That's actually a pretty smart idea.

Maybe we should take this to the musicians forum. :)

I left work early today. I was home before my 11 yr old daughter got home. She walked in and I said "How was school?" She said it was fine. I asked her what she learned today and she replied "Apparently not enough because I have to go back on Monday!" Ah...this kid cracks me up every day! :)

Jumping jacks. Passes the time and it warms you up. Or I recommend Ranger IPAs. Same result with less effort. ;)
