Spooky got a mouse last night... He leaves them at the foot of my bed. Once he put one in my shoe.

Finally got enough firewood to make it to the weekend... Still two new widowmakers out there.

    ^^^ That.

When a tree falls, either cut or falls naturally, and it get's hung up in other trees, they become very dangerous just to be around... let alone trying to get it down. A lot of guys die from this.

There's just no way to figure out what they are going to do.

My property is thick woods and that Emerald Ash Borer came through here and killed of all the Ash trees. That is now my firewood but they are standing dead among other trees. I don't want to cut down the trees around them so it's really tricky getting them down.

i worked my last widow maker for hours and nothing......you cantjust cut near the break because itcan kick opposite of how a tree normally falls

if you cutthe tree it is leaning on be aware that t too wwill kick towards you as opposed to away but sometimes its the best solution.....think of a toothpick between 2 fingers....slowly bend until it snaps but before it does you gotta guiess where they are gonna land

Random fact...I am an expert with widowmakers (and pretty much everything else regarding trees, climbing and/or power lines). I wish I could be there to bail you out of those problems trysonswood. You guys be careful with that shit. They can be very, very dangerous. But sometimes they can be pretty simple too. Undercuts are your friend.

That's really cool. I had heard the term used in boxing (when a guy has a certain punch that is really hard, he can call it the widowmaker) and in other circumstances to describe badass things, but I didnt know it was intended specifically for trees.

    I have officially become old.
    [the following is sad,but true]
My buddy came round tonight to play chess.
As he's also a lefty, having beaten me 6-5,we ended up jamming, using my guitars.
Then he wanted to watch porn...not my thing, but ok.
So there I was, looking at a couple going for gold-and all I kept thinking was "I really like that bed".
I still have no idea who the 'actors' were or what the plot was.
[I left him to it and went to make a pot of espresso-how sad is THAT?!]
But that big 4-poster bed has stayed in my mind....
    OHHHH,boy. Youth,where hast thee gone.....

Funny thing (small world, I guess)...I used to also be a golden gloves boxer when I was younger and boxed at a certain Big 12 university.....a long time ago.....I only mention that because of the boxing reference. But as far as trees, we usually call anything that is large, loose and above us...a widowmaker. You just have to have a certain amount of success in predicting what is going to happen. It's mostly just experience.

Of course... Cutting from the top side just pinches your saw. The second one today, I did an under cut, dropped off a 5 foot section and the upper part of the tree lifted and balanced in the tree it's stuck in. It's still there... I don't want to cut down the tree it's hung up in because it's a Redbud.... It's going to lose a branch, but I hope the rest of the tree is okay. If not, it's loaded with seed pods so I can start some more from seed. I love those Redbuds.
