Perhaps Occitan French is not spoken in the presence of Parisians as a courtesy to those who don't speak it? Or has the language died out?

Actually it shows as Aquitaine on maps. Is that a French department?
But within that is a smaller region known as Gascogne, but listed as Gascony in English language documentation.

i think the language is dying out. There are other regional languages in France (Breton or Alsacien for example) but yeah, they are spoken by a tiny minority of people.

yeah, Aquitaine is a region (it has 5 or 6 départements in it, i can't remember).
i never know if proper nouns have translations in English... i mean it seems arbitrary lol. Like for example a city like Venice in Italy, is Venise in french and Venezia (or Venesia) in italian. but New York is called New York everywhere.

    :2thumbsup:

One one hand, I don't want these minorities trapped by language barriers and unable to find work or travel, but part of the beauty of France is its diversity, so I hope that they will always say "vive la difference!"
For instance, Carole, I am very glad that you do not look exactly like me.

Agreed, the Lords of language are mad, totally stark raving mad! And inconsistent.
In Spanish: London is Londres, the German language is Aleman, New York is Nueva York but no one ever uses the "Nueva", they just call it by the English name. In some parts of Mexico, car is "carro", but I know people who detest these English loan words and use the more formal "coche" for car.

We should all call it by its original name Londinium, but languages have a way of changing over the centuries.
Carole, we learn textbook Spanish in class and then learn spoken Spanish in the homes and markets of the Spanish-speakers.

i should've known it was hockey... i count on men to tell me about sports events. :)

yeah, im gonna call it Londinium from now on.
oh it's the same here. i learnt Spanish in school and i've been to Spain a few times, so i understand the language well, but i'm not exactly fluent. i know some Italian too, it's really close to French so that makes it easier.
