I've recently decided to re-assess my approach to playing guitar. I think I've got to the point where I'm just not getting any better....and I'm really not great anyway. I play electric almost 100% of the time but I decided to dust off and re-string my acoustic that I learned to play on. It feels great to play that guitar....it's like an old friend who I spent hours and hours with.

But here's the thing.....I suck at playing guitar as a pro. So many guys are as good or better than me. I'm ok but I've always felt like piano/keys is my thing. I took piano in college. I love playing piano. So once in a while...I kind of assess where I need to be focused musically and what I need to do....and I usually wish I would have spent the last couple of decades playing piano instead of guitar. Maybe I shouldn't have got rid of my piano. I'm just thinking out loud here. :(

Why is guitar playing seen as a competition? "He's better than I am, but I'm much better than that other guy."

Fuck that, play what you play, it's not competition.

I totally agree. I used to worry about who was better when I was much younger. I'm not so much worried about that these days.....just noticing who is great at it. And actually....there are a number of younger guys who watch me play but them looking up to me seems kind of silly in my mind.

My point wasn't about playing guitar. It was that maybe I should be playing a different instrument.

I think it would be better if we just didn't try so hard to be somewhere at a certain time in the morning.

That would be nice. Unfortunately sometimes I have an appointment at 7am called day shift, they generally don't like to pay you if you don't get there at a certain time :D

Right now it's 3am (I must be lonely) and heavy rain has kept me awake all night. It's supposed to be summer here in this dry state.

Wizardofodd... I'm not that great a guitar player either. I play AT it. As long as I can play well enough to sing, I'm happy. I saw BB King in an old video with U2 when they were getting ready to release that song, 'When Love Comes to Town'. BB was telling Bono that he doesn't play chords. Bono said.. don't worry about that. Do what you do. We'll hire someone to play chords. :)

And speaking of stringed instruments that I have little proficiency at... My Mom told me last night that I've inherited her harp. Okay.. I take that back. I have ZERO proficiency at harp playing. I can't even imagine tuning the huge thing. And where does she think I'll put it? Wonder what it would take to electrify it? heh. I'd need a wah wah pedal for sure.

Oh my Wiz...I can't believe you gave up playing piano but you were good enough to play in college AND you loved it. what the heck?!? AND you got rid of your piano? :yikes: What in the world?!?

    I have a failure to compute. :)

I taught myself to play guitar to a teeny degree after hearing my cousin play classical guitar and having a college roommate that played as well. There were years I didn't play piano as much but I NEVER even thought about not playing.

Did you get rid of the piano because you thought you weren't going to play professionally?

I'm super curious about this. :)

I had to get rid of my piano in 1980 because I had moved so much and already had asked all my friends to move it here and there. Also the place I was moving to was really small. I studied piano since I was a kid and even went to Ithaca College as a music major. I wish I had never gotten rid of it but I really did not have any other option at the time.

I got rid of my piano because I was moving and wouldn't have room to keep it. But to be clear, I didn't mean to imply that I was a great piano player or a poor guitar player. I'm a much better guitar player than piano player but that's because I never stopped playing guitar. Piano has always felt like more of a natural instrument for me though. I wish I could say that I've been playing piano for 20-25 years.....I'd like to think I'd be pretty decent at it by now. :)
