Just to be clear....I wasn't saying kids shouldn't learn calculus or any other subject. You never know when that knowledge will help you later. But I think I'm with Lynnbrown in that these things are being taught in the most ridiculous way possible and I don't think it's very effective. Kids are being taught to answer tests. And at the same time, programs like music, art, shop class, etc are being cut or eliminated.

I think we use a lot more of our education than we think we do. We simply do not state well I am using calculus. If I track food prices and notice a trend in sale items and seasonal items I am using calculus. :) I had a friend who failed math all the time in high school, felt that he could not do math. He decided to become a chef. He uses math daily but to this day still feels he can not. Irony. :)

I introduced Lace to Celeste and they are now best buddies. I am so happy that they like each other. It went amazing well and within 15 minutes I took these pictures.

I think it helped that Lace and Buttercup were buddies. Also Lace is a lot smaller to handle. ;)

Here at least grade 12. Maybe though eye sight should also be mandated. :)

my city uses contractors for garbage pickup

long story short= trash guys need to pass drug test to keep job....but you can get a job driving a city bus all day long full of people when youre high as fuck and its not a problem until you crash it because drug tests arent mandatory unless theres an accident

cool beans. I know you no longer watch tv. but Ive a few channels that run Route 66 and ADAM 12 all the time. I hardly ever miss either. (oh shit Ive to go to sleep , damn it Route 66 is on... Stays up.. drowsy for work.
I was just telling the gf Milner was sick little over a week ago.. gf loves to watch ADAM12.. I was figuring the cancer that took his daughter might of finally caught up to him. But it was heart failure ..
yeah man he was cool, his character was totally laid back and even when he did get hot headed, he was still cool. I hope they run a marathon this week of 66 or 12.. But damn metv/retro hasnt even ran a memorial commercial in remembrance and they usally never miss the old stars that have passed..

A math question from tonight (as I was about to walk out the door).....there is a rectangle divided into smaller boxes. On one end are the numbers 2 and 22 in their own boxes. At the other end is the number 5....and a series of blank boxes between them. The question is "A company pays an employee $22 for 2 hours of work. How much do they pay for 5 hours of work?" (This is seriously 7th grade shit)

    Me: 22 divided by 2...multiplied by 5
    Daughter: So that's 55.
    Me: Yup. Pretty easy.
Daughter: Ok...but there are still all of these other boxes to fill in between those numbers.
    Me: Why?
Daughter: It says to use the <something> chart.
Me: I guess you better use that chart then but the correct answer is 55. Gotta go. Love you.

I'm still just as baffled as I was last night about this. Seriously? 22/2=11, 11x5=55 isn't good enough anymore? Wow!

^^ It is as if the school doesn't really want the kids to learn the work nor how to go about finding answers easily...tptb (the powers that be) seem intent to confuse. That's all I get out of all that.

I did well in math and algebra (algebra was like a game to me)...but geometry was hell. I even wound up dropping it since I had enough math credits as it was in hs. That - geometry - was where I wasn't allowed to just give them the damn answers but had to show 5 or 10 or however many different steps to "prove" my work.

These standards define what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics. But asking a student to understand something also means asking a teacher to assess whether the student has understood it. But what does mathematical understanding look like? One way for teachers to do that is to ask the student to justify, in a way that is appropriate to the student’s mathematical maturity, why a particular mathematical statement is true or where a mathematical rule comes from. Mathematical understanding and procedural skill are equally important, and both are assessable using mathematical tasks of sufficient richness. http://www.corestandards.org/Math/

I don't remember having much of a problem doing geometry but I hated algebra. Like I said before....I just thought it was silly to go through all those steps when I already knew the answer. I think peoples brains just work differently though. I'm good with numbers...statistics, probabilities, etc. I can usually do math faster in my head than my wife can racing me on a calculator. But I'm doing it my own way.

Another thing that blows me away...which happens far too often. I'll be checking out at the store and the total is maybe $18.27. I'll give the cashier a $20 bill. He/she punches it into the register which says to give me back $1.73. At that exact moment I realize I have 27 cents on me and give it to the cashier. Then they give you this blank stare because somehow the simple math just isn't there for them. I have no idea why. Then I don't want to sound condescending or anything so I quietly say "If if give you the 27 cents, I get $2 back." And they just take my word for it!! Because they still haven't figured it out.

Ah...I see. I was thinking maybe you had an Alaskan mill attachment for one of your saws. I've never used one but they do look like a cheap and effective way to do some basic milling. A guy like you could probably build one pretty easily if you wanted one.

LOL! omg you would not believe how many times as a cashier that people would do that exact thing - give me whatever change (after the purchase was rung up) so that they could get back bills...and when I quickly gave them the correct change they would often act surprised! :D

I would always say...I went to school a long time ago...I know how to count and do math...which school never taught me how to make change, even though I would give it credit.

However, ALL the young people I've ever worked with or have rung me up where ever CANNOT make change without the "answer" being on the cash register computer. I've found myself wondering what in the world they would do if all they had was the old timey cash registers that only added and didn't show the amount of change.

    Its pitiful...and that's our posterity

Yes...that's right. I forgot. But...if he did have a welder, he could easily make one of those mills. It can't be that hard to make one.
