I once killed a bat with a shovel. Another time many years earlier I killed one with the plastic rod from a set of blinds.

I think that is a bit of an over reaction.

The time with the blinds stick was intentional, I was an ignorant eight year old and I was just excited to be up on the room of my house. The time with the shovel was wholly necessary. If something is trying (at any degree) to attack me I will not hesitate to react. People often get offened by this because they forget that we are animals to. I was an animal being targeted and I responded the way an animal with thumbs would respond.

If a bear was trying to attack you, okay fair enough. Even a killer spider. I don't know what it is like other there, but here bats are protected.

I still wouldn't care. Here seagalls are protected, but if one targeted me and was instigating something, I would not hesitate to react or respond in a way that was self defensive. I am an animal and I shouldn't feel bad to respond that way just because I may be an animal with a little more intelligence who has invented a large set of morals. Because I am bigger is also no argument. There are poisonous insects the size of my thumbnail that could kill me in a matter of minutes. Would you hesitate to squish one of these if it targeted you? By acting only by our morals with regards to animals we lose our own instinct and self preservation simply because we, "feel bad." You think many animals feel bad when they attack a human? I highly doubt it.

I did mention killer spiders did I not? So, I was pointing out the poisonous small creatures too.

Seeing as most animals can't pick up a bat and whack you with, I can't agree with you. But, the next time a bat flies at me waving a hammer in my face, I'll remember what you've said.

Of course, do what you like, but people will not always agree with what you are doing.

How were you "targeted" by a bat? Their sonar is used to avoid objects or to hone in on prey. You simply would not register as a target.

I was wondering the same thing.
Bats are cool and a very important part of any eco-system they are found in, but that can be said of killer spiders as well.

Random fact about me: I mow my lawn with a push mower.

Both bats and spiders are killers, each and every one, but I suppose you could say that spiders are more cold blooded about it.
