Easy....just say "I have some other plans that I can't reschedule. Sorry about that. If you give me a little advance notice, I can make sure I'm free next time."

I find that it's best to "shut the door" immediately and then deal with the pleasantries. That way, no matter what is said afterward, I've already made it clear that I have plans and won't be available.

It was pretty brutal out there today. It wasn't even really so cold (maybe in the teens for the high temp) but the wind was relentless and very cold. My son was standing out of the wind most of the time and he told me "I don't know how you're even functioning up in the air! I'm freezing down here." I said "It's a state of mind. Convince yourself that it really isn't very cold and then focus your mind on what you need to do. Ignore the cold." A little bit later he was working down on the ground in the snow and he said "Wow! This is great! I'm imagining that I'm working on a nice warm beach and walking around in some really fucking cold sand!!"

    Hahahaha!

He doesn't complain too much though. There was once a day when he was really hating it and I basically said "Yeah...it sucks sometimes. I remember dealing with this exact same thing before you were even born...and then on countless days while you were growing up and thinking life was unfair to you." He has a much different perspective now. :)

I have the clothes down. I don't fuck around at 40-50 feet in the air with no wind block. I have the best gear you can buy....because it's worth the money in my situation. It can be just as cold on the ground though because you aren't always moving.

your mind might be able to break the cold, but sometimes the body itself dont give a shit... of course my immune in compromised some/much with MS. Even if you catch a cold it dont mean you are weak or havent done enough to protect yourself from the elements.. its just the bodies way of building better resistance to those elements...

I feel like I've been very fortunate. I catch a slight cold about once a year when the weather changes dramatically. Otherwise....I'm usually pretty healthy and generally unaffected by the heat or the cold. But at work...when you're in the air, there is sometimes a lot more to worry about besides the cold. That's why it seems tougher from the ground. You might be on the ground and worried about the cold....because you're freezing. But when you're in the air within a few feet of some seriously high voltage power lines....you're still cold but your focus kind of changes.

Most days when it's really cold, I go through being kind of warm>kind of cold>really cold>hands are numb>hands are getting feeling back and very painful>hands are warm for the rest of the day. But that happens and I feel it but you don't seem to acknowledge it so much because of all of the other things you're thinking about. It's kind of like...yeah....we're cold....we're always cold in the winter.
