We had three earthquakes here today but nobody felt them except for me and a dude who lives four blocks to the west.

then they got wet again when i went out to fix my car

 

My heating solutions for equipment seemed to work like a charm today. Granted....that truck (and chipper) was parked inside over the weekend but they sat out in single digit temps (with no heaters on) for a good part of the day before we turned the heaters on to warm them up for a bit and use them. The chipper started like it was the middle of summer and the hydraulics on the boom took about 1-2 minutes before it was moving at full speed (usually it crawls for 15-20 minutes or more before the oil starts to warm up).

But that wasn't starting out with equipment left outside overnight. Tomorrow will be the real test....single digit temps, 35-40 mph winds, wind chill warnings and flat, rural ground with no wind block at all. It's going to be really freakin' cold out and we are parked outside and unplugged tonight.

 

We took the parrot Gizmo that we are babysitting out tonight. He did great and had fun sitting on Kieran. Kieran has a natural thing with birds, probably because he is so calm when around them.

wind chill is only a factor for living things... has no effect on metal objects

they sell stick on heaters for gluing onto oilpans..magnetic ones too but the glued on ones are harder for people to steal......might work on the hydraulic tanks...

 

We bought the 300w magnetic heater for the hydraulic tank. It was the hottest we could get off the shelf. It has a surprisingly strong magnet. The tank has a sort of square open section that goes through the middle of the tank. So instead of it just being a square tank.....it's a square with an open center....so that probably doesn't make much sense at all. It's literally a square tank...onside and out. So we put the heater on an inside wall just above the line out to the pump. Someone would have to really be thinking to find it to steal it. It's buried way up in the boom pedestal.
