Even if Dirk Pitt is an evil man (a position I do not take); even if he is a greedy capitalist (a position he might not dispute); neither of those subtract from his argument.

Raising the minimum wage should not be based on whether it helps (or hurts) good (or bad) people. Even less should the decision be based on the morality of its proponents or opponents.

Can anyone spell "ad hominum"; I probably can't.

It seems that the obvious answer would be the ones actually receiving it. But it will go far beyond that. The pitance that you pay your unskilled labor will be seen for what it truly is - nothing but a rotten carrot dangled in the face of the hungry. You care nothing about those that work for you. You are nothing but a 21st century slave owner.

I say this because you are a business owner that does not pay the worker a livable wage. At your paltry $8 an hour, this would give your slave a whopping $320 for the week. Mighty big of you. After taxes, this poor bastard will take home what? $250?

You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

If you read what I said then you know that I was just talking about your so called movie business-Now how else would I know that crap unles you had wasted my time by sending it to me-It means nothing-I said to post it out for everyone to see and evaluate-Maybe someone in your state has heard of your deals and there is an investigation being launched-Why else will you not show the public the names and numbers of these so called "business's"-I could run a background check to see if you indeed are the owner but I would rather hear from posters as to wheether anyone has ever heard of your "company"-Then we can check with the business bureau to see how many complaints have been lodged or law sutes filed against you-I still say your a fraud as a full time small business owner would never dedicate this much time to talking on the net-They are usuallt too busy with the business--unless it is floundering under chapter13-Which is it wise guy?_Can you be a small time greedy little business owner and sit yaking on here all day-Don't think your for real at all-iI already deleted that note you sent me cuz I don't like spam=- but if you want to try and sell your case ; then post that useless info for everyone to evaluate-including the Department of Revenue! hahaha
I say your a liar and a con man-

Why the hell are you so bitter/angry, Rob?

It's mildly amusing, but the novelty is wearing off and I'm not seeing any substance.

I'm not angry-I just have no tolerance for fools-or greedy people-or smart ass young people that have no idea what they are talking about-People that have no years on this planet or life experience should shut the fuck up at times and listen to those that do-The" facts" that are stated from books do not always tell the whole story-I have met many educated idiots in my life-As far as anger goes-I am very happy' safe and secure in my world-I worked for what I have and owe nobody anything-What you don't realize is any money arguments you make ' we have already heard them many years ago-Nothing your saying is new-and the economy is still struggling but as the war ends it will improve and always has-You have made alot of people mad on here for nothing-You have gone out of your way to create friction where non existed-There are some things that will always gaurentee an immediate response usually escallating to an argument-If you like that sort of thing and it seems you do-then try switching to politics or religion that should get a raise out of someone and make you a happy-Your need for attention is obvious and I honestly believe you would benefit from some therapy-There is some deep issues going on there-most likely abandonment-as you are seeking attention too much -Personally-I am done talking with you-If you continue to piss people off you will be kicked off-If you have anything decent to add' feel free-otherwise;seek mental help and come back when your well-best wishes for a speedy recovery-

I didn't realize dissenting opinion was a crime. And I didn't realize 40 years of smoking pot and trucking made you the world's leading expert on economics.

"I disprove of what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"

Even Voltaire would think you're a jackass.

See-thats what I mean-When did I ever say I smoked pot?-When did I say I drove trucks for 40 years?-and when did I claim to be an expert at anything?-Please-do like I said-and call a therapist-get an appointment-your only prolonging the inevitable-complete mental collapse-When people begin to hear and see things that are not there or not true then it is being generated by their own thoughts -Your mind is playing games on you-Next time we speak maybe you will have the truth as the world knows it-not as you would have it 'but as it really is-big difference-but you will find out if you live long enough and your attitude does not shorten your existence on Earth-

This statement tells me and others alot about the way you think-Save it for the therapist when you get there-They will be most interested inyour really cool outlook on life-what garbage-"The truth is that every intelligent man dreams of being a gangster and of ruling over society by force alone. As it is not so easy as the detective novels might lead one to believe, one generally relies on politics and joins the cruelest party. "

I must have some sort of addiction ... Politic-oholic??? Poloholic? Pot-oholic - no wait, that's something else... I don't know. I hate these arguments, but I just can't keep away & can't keep out of it.

    Apologies, full disclosure, and disclaimers:
Apologies - I've been known to make some looong posts & this'll be one; sorry Rob, but I'm partly going against you here. Full disclosure - I have owned & operated small businesses & been self-employed; plus and as part of that, I've worked on and off over the past 30 years as an international business computer consultant. Almost all of it was working with small businesses - which makes sense because small businesses make up most of the businesses and employ most of the work force in the U.S. and around the world. In addition, my involvement in all that has been greatly reduced over the past several years. I'm now, more than anything else, a small living off the land, self-sufficient, self sustaining - what ever you want to call it - small farmer. And as such, I can't and don't operate in how_I_wish_it_was land, I have to operate in how_things_really_are land. Disclaimer - often I include research and reference information in my posts, but this time I'm just giving my opinions based own observations. And they are just that ... this old hippie's opinion.

Anyhow... To start with I think everyone going at each other in this thread needs to have a couple glasses of red wine, or have a smoke (even if it's a cigarette - quit them myself), but to calm down, relax and stop the fighting and name calling. Appealing to hippies for peace.

I think that Dirk_Pitt is a small businessperson, and that all he's saying about that is true. All he's saying about his businesses is completely consistent with the experiences and problems of any other small business. While we're at it - Question: How many of the rest of you own & operate a small business? How many of you are providing employment for anyone? How many of you are juggling tax laws, suppliers, customers, government regulations, competitors, insurance companies, etc... while still trying to meet your payroll & perhaps have a life & family? I'll go out on a limb here and guess no one. Let me tell you - it ain't easy.

However, this is supposed to be about raising the minimum wage. This is a classic case of a simple sounding question(s), "Should the minimum wage be raised, and if so by how much?", with very complex answers. Now comes some of my philosophy of life: I think everything and every discussion is a set of trade offs, or compromises. And, "Should the minimum wage be raised?" is sure one of those. As for myself, do I think it should be raised? Yes, but I only feel that by a narrow margin - 55% for, 45% against. Here's why...

Reasons for: What else can be done - right now - in one-step, as a first step, to bring some measure of relief? More of my personal philosophy, change is best brought about by setting a long range goal, then heading toward it, one small step at a time.

Reasons against: It's only a band-aid. It will be an increase in wages for some and an increase in cost for all. It will make labor cost (due to both the increase and "spill over") higher and therefore the cost of doing business in the U.S. slightly higher & will therefore be a tiny more reason for business relocation out of the U.S. It will make the illegal immigration situation a little worse (and if you don't think that's a problem, do as I've done ... talk to some family members left behind - children miss their mothers & fathers).

But mostly in the long run it won't help. If we raise the minimum wage a dollar an hour, each year for the next 20 years, in the year 2026 the minimum wage would be just over $25 per hour. (Ok, we all know that can't happen - but I'm saying "If"). My point is that it would still be the minimum. No matter how far you slide the wage & earning scale up or down, there always have been and always been those at the bottom. It's been that way since the beginning of recorded history. It's the basis of the classic struggle between the haves and the have-nots.

In my opinion, a big part of the problem is that the "have-nots" don't vote in big enough numbers. These days, in the U.S. (maybe elsewhere too) the "haves" use, among other things, cynicism and wedge issues (such as race) to keep themselves in power. Look at voter turn-out by income level and age (younger voters typically - not always - are at the lower end of the scale). If that weren't the case, some real change might happen.

Because, in the bigger picture, it's not just those making minimum wage who are struggling. It's the much larger number who are living in poverty. That's where real change COULD happen. Things like a tax credit (not deduction) for higher education and much better public education in general, universal health care (to include cost effective preventive medicine), low cost housing, mass/public transportation, etc. And taxation based on disposable income, rather than taxes that take away from basic living expenses. Perhaps a national sales tax (not on basic food & medicine), rather than any income tax.

Well, this has been 2 1/2 hours of typing & poor_old_dad's poor_old_fingers are tired & need a rest.

Again, let me say, please folks, I think we can disagree and discuss without fighting & name-calling. And if we can't, well...

    Peace,
    poor_old_dad

Poor Old Dad, and Dirk, I think it'll benefit the little guy that barely has enough right now to pay the rent and utilities and buy food. If the legislature can pass increases on their wages every year or so why shouldn't the little man get a boost from time to time? If the taxpayer can suck up their raises, why shouldn't the employer do it from time to time?

If they cut back on their campaign donations and lobbying expenses, they probably wouldn't even notice it.

It's been ten years. Don't you think it's time?
