Hey people... had my dreads done about 1 month ago They're starting to smell a bit interesting so I've been putting scented wax in my hair to try mask the smell. It seems to sort of work, but not very well. I think the smell is coming from the rubber bands that I left at the base of the dreadlocks. The dreadlock artist told me that they would prevent them from falling apart... and that eventually they would just disintegrate into nothing. Now I've just read that wax isn't the right way to go about having dreads? what do I do? I paid lots of money for them and don't want this last month to be a waste of time. I've been trying my best! peace out... from one hippy to another
I think the answer is pretty obvious....more rubber bands. It will help your locks mature like 3x the normal speed, increase your income and apparently make girls dance.

1) In my opinion, getting dreads 'done' is a complete waste of money and totally unnessacary. 2) They should not smell. You can wash dreaded/dreading hair as often as you like. Use a natural shampoo and dry them completely. 3) Wax? No. No.No. My conclusion: Deep condition that shit and start over. Try either backcombing or just naturally letting them dread. I started mine with backcombing and threw some rubber bands in. I had the bands in for about 2 months then took them out cause they were annoying. Rubber bands constrict the hair which is what you don't want. So now that I was rubberbandless the backcombing began to fall out, which was the best thing to happen for my dreads! I now had sectioned but loose hair and I have been letting it dread up on its own without touching it. All I do is rip the roots apart after I wash them so that they don't all combine into a monster dread. Dreadlocks take patience! Lots and lots of it. I have been working on them for almost a year now and they are nowhere near complete. They are messy and loopy and frizzy and I LOVE them.
Since every comment so far has been start again and i'm sure you don't want to do that you can try get the wax out. heat might work get the hair dryer on it. wash them a lot.... get all that shit out of your hair... I had wax in mine at the start and they looked like candles.. take out the rubber bands take out the wax call those assholes and tell them they fucked up your hair and you want a refund and for the love of god don't go back to them for their upkeep bullshit.... dreads are just knotted hair. You do not need to ever get anything done to it.
