The prognosis is not good. In the past 40 years the lake has shrivelled from 14,300 sq m to about 900 sq m. Traditionally the lake supplied agricultural irrigation for Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon as well as Chad but the lake is now entirely within the borders of Chad. The fossil record indicates that the lake has dried up more or less completely perhaps half a dozen times over the past thousand years. The current state of the lake, exacerbated by recent droughts and global warming is having a huge impact on agriculture as well as the lives and livelihoods of those who depend upon the lake for fishing and fresh water supply.
during the 2000 us of a presidential delections, did people in chad think they were hanging chad expatriots in florida with the hanging chad controversy?
I'm not sure that Chud or Chud 2 were ever released in Chad. It's possible that some Chadians may have accidentally rented a copy while abroad. It's fairly safe to say that those two films didn't garner much popularity or credibility among Chadians, who are in general a discerning people.
Chadians are a proud people. The national anthem, La Tchadienne, even references the name of their fine country, and is translated from the French as: People of Chad, arise and take up the task! You have conquered the soil and won your rights; Your freedom will be born of your courage. Lift up your eyes, the future is yours. Oh, my Country, may God protect you, May your neighbours admire your children. Joyful, peaceful, advance as you sing, Faithful to your fathers who are watching you.
You're not the first person to remark upon this, in 2000 it was a source of much amusement though now the joke is somewhat old and has become a source of some bemusement among Chadians. The irony is of course that most Americans are unaware of the existence of the fine country of Chad.
do you think the u.n. should intervene in chad now that the war in darfur is spilling over as arab horsemen are now entering chad and attacking native chadians?
We are extremely concerned about the recent incursions into Chad and the violence which has been occurring in recent months. We have already declared a state of emergency in the south east of the country and have not ruled out asking for UN support in the coming months. I and the rest of the Chadian government will be keeping a close eye on the situation.
have any visitors ever visited the country whose name was chad and how did chadians respond to someone named chad?
Yes, we have had quite a few Chads visit Chad, mostly Americans (though I believe there was an Australian Chad in 1972). How we laugh! We welcome them with open arms, and usually let off fireworks at some point during their visit.
in elections there, do the ballots have chads to be punched out? or how exactly are the votes counted?
As a former French colony, and along with most of the African nations, we use the simple European method of putting a pencil mark next to a candidate's name on a piece of paper which is then posted into a ballot box. We prefer good old-fashioned intimidation to fix our elections.
Me and President Deby are like that. I did briefly live in whales, lucky thing really, I was thrown overboard during a long sea journey, way back in the day.
