So i've been growing my hair out for a while and it's about 11-12 inches long now. I'm totally set on getting dreads -- or i would be if i weren't searching for a job. Getting a job is a bitch enough, and with dreads it's probably 5 times that. I wanted to know how presentable new dreads (2-3 months old) are and what you can do with them to make them look not so crazy messy all over the place. I'm guessing my dreads will be like 7-8 inches long when i'm done backcombing. that's not really long enough to put in a pony tail, so are there any other options? If i like push them backward with my hand will they stay that way? I'm just gana be applying for basic stuff: fast food, wall mart, etc. Really want to get dreaded up, but getting a job's gana be a bitch! Need some knowledge!
2-3 month old dreadlocks are going to be messy an will pretty much do whatever they want. They can be crocheted, but crocheting comes with it's own set of pros and cons one of the cons being that they get stiffer and so won't sit where you want them to. Hats/tams and headbands will be your friend.
Yeah a headband is always a good way to go. get one in a 'dignified' colour like dark grey and they'll barely notice the dreads...hopefully
hairband, ponytail, hair clips to distract... the whole 'getting a job with dreads' thing is bull. ive never had a problem (currently have two very different jobs and have had dreads for 4.5years)
also 2-3 month old backcombed dreads, in my experience, are generally just big and poofy and fluffly, so defo try and hold them now. get a length of elastic fabric and make a headband or something
I say skip the backcombing, just stop combing in general, wash your scalp with bronners or baking soda and wear a headband for job interviews if you think things look a little messy. Once your hair is long enough you can put it in a pony tail too. You can use a little coconut oil or aloe vera to tame frizzyness if you need it and just rock on. Thing's might take a little longer, but it will be real gradual so your boss will just have to deal with it. Make sure they understand that you hair is still plenty clean and that you are happy to wear a headband/hat if they are concerned about it. On the note of getting a job with locks, I haven't cut my hair for 8 years or combed it for 5 and after 4 years working at the front desk at a gym and not having a rad time, I decided it was time to quit. I had been looking for jobs before this, but they had always needed someone to start immediately and I still had to give 2 weeks notice at the gym. Finally decided to quit without having something else lined up, but found a rad holiday job which pays so much better than my old job that now I have a lot more time to figure out what I want to do. Also, my hair is long enough that I can do rad things with it so I just put it all up in this long 'corn row' or upside down french braid that I run around my head like a crown. Looked real sharp, and I rolled up on a skateboard. If you get your mind set on it, you'll be able to figure something out. Now I'm climbing trees, ladders, and building and putting holiday lights up. So much fun. I get to do things that I'd normally get yelled at/arrested for and get paid!
Your an idiot... I have had dreads for 8 years and hold down a senior management position in a big company, keep them clean tie them back and no problems.
How Dare You Call NP An Idiot, That Is In Fact A Bare Faced Insult To All Self Respecting Idiots.... Cheers Glen.
Ironic, self-critical, maybe teasing you? Sometimes you just gotta roll with the comments When I first dreaded my hair many moons ago I was working as a school teacher. I wore a tidy headscarf/bandanna thing just to hold my hair back and cover the mess while everything did it's thing. Just appear clean, fresh and keen and I'm sure you'll score something eventually. Good Luck!
