^actually i didnt anticipate this discussion. twas a good one though. props for sticking to what you believe
thanks, i just want to reiterate that i am not a religious nut and that i do not believe in any g-d in the traditional sense. thank you *steps off podium* is we still fwendz, np?
Since the true tenements of Rastafarian philosophy preach intolerance and racism I wonder how it became so ingrained with peace love and understanding.
i guess it's kinda like the true root of islam is peace, but jihad developed somehow. i bet it's more like it started as opposing whites because they were the system. now the system has become more racially integrated, so now rasta opposes babylon in it's entirety.
I don't know anything about rasta's and I'm certainly not gonna go all rasta on my husband's ass just because I got dreadz. I like the odd bob marley song but I'm no fan.
The first time I dreaded my hair it was just for fun. I knew nothing of Rastafari. While at the grocery store there was a Rasta next to me in line who leaned over and quietly said my way....."Did you know dreads are from the bible?" I simply said "No." At which point he asked me why I had them and I couldnt give him a better answer other than..."Uh...I like em...whats it to ya?!" He smiled and told me to go home and look up a bible verse [I forget what it is...Deuteronomy something or other]....anywho...he also told me that dreads are a symbol of RasTafari and are a lifestyle and not a hairstyle. I went home and looked up the verse and felt really bad for sporting a hairstyle that has so much significant meaning to some without having my heart in the right place....so I brushed them out that night. That moment in my life was a pretty big turning point spiritually speaking. I am not Rasta but I respect, admire, and live according to the philosophies of Sellassie as well as many other significant leaders...notably the Dalai Lama. I do not worship these people...and I do not sport Rasta or Tibetan colors on purpose. You can always tell the fakers from the real followers though by giving a smile or a nod of acknowledgement and seeing how they respond. lol. My partner is hardcore Rasta and when other genuine Rastas walk by they will nod at eachother or say things like "Rasta" or whatever in passing. But the fakers are usually scared and dont make eye contact! Its funny.
I'm guessing the more likely explanation for the reversal of stance in Rastafarian philosophy would be that Caucasian people are just as willing to spend money on this ridicules religion as any brown skinned person.
^ mandy you're the shit. and i mean that in a good way. hey noodleface go read the whole thread then add to it.
" i walk on toilet paper cuz i'm the shit" lmao seriously though mandy, you seem like an awesome person. the evolution of "shit" is kinda like how rasta turned from hate whitey to hate babylon.
thanks Vig! Not to sound totally lame but I think your cool too. *hugs* =] LMAO at the comaprison of the evolution of the word "shit" and Rasta menatlity.
lol *hugs back* this was a good thread. i'm glad it didn't turn into a shit storm of white rasta hate.
I thought it was going to too! I had my popcorn all ready to watch the fights. Ha. J/K Im glad it didnt...I hatez drama..especially internet drama...its the LAMEST of all!
Modern day rastafari is a joke. As is christianity. Both are filled with followers that don't truely follow or change all the rules and practices to make it more convenient for their lifestyles. Which kind of defeats the purpose of "following" a religion *Goes to listen to his Jah Marley Legends record
I never see any real rasta or "fake" rastas in my city. I guess the closest I am to knowing one is vig and perhaps that episode of Super Nanny where there was... well, I'm sure no one really cares about the super nanny episode and the RastifarI family. lol
Funnily enough there is a rastaish shop in my town xD the front is covered with bongs and rasta tees and bob marley merch... AND they sell packs of knives... Bs xD Bit silly how some people these days, as you say, carry around rasta hats or ovens etc xD I love jamaica and the caribbean but im not gonna show the colours because 1) the colours are ugly 2) it isnt me xD I disagree with it lollss. And yea, those people are wannabeeees
the reason everyone mentioned (that true religions dont exist because they've all been warped to fit our needs) is exactly why i do not follow any religion... i was raised christian...i had moments in my life when i was full of "the spirit of the lord" and yada yada...i fell away from the religion at other points...but basically, the reason i dont like christianity, is cause for a group of people to teach acceptance and love, well, they sure dont listen to themselves when they speak...the youth group at the church i went to was more cliquish than the high school i attended as far as white's not being true rasta's just cause they're white...well if that was the original intent of rasta's, then fuck em i say...my skin color has no bearing on who i am or what i stand for...i've met people who appear white, but act more like a stereotypical black man (and that's their true personality), as well as black men who act like the stereotypical white man (same situation, it's their personality)... personally, i pick the parts from religions that i like, and apply them to my own spiritual being...no reason to attach any religion to it...i try to be accepting of other people, kind, generous, considerate, all those things...but without being attached to a religion, im actually able to put those to use, rather than saying "i accept everyone but gays and non-believers" or "fuck whitey" ...not sure i got my point across...but i tried edit: i think my point was basically "religion = hypocrisy"
