The problem is from a self promoting musicians perspective that since the recording software/interfaces, have become cheaper and easier to use, and distribution has become decentralized anyone can do it and a lot more people are. This is where the problems arise. Quality control has gone out the window. There is a certain amount of Dunning Kreuger that goes on since anyone can do it even those who shouldn't and they are convinced that their garbage is genius. Even talented musicians/songwriters throw out about 90% of their shit ideas to get to the one good one. A producers job is to say to the artist, "Hey you can do better." Without that ego/reality check there the market becomes flooded with product that generally ranges from mediocre to utter crap. Under the economic principles of supply and demand the music industry has run on a model of promoting and creating a demand for mediocrity since there is an almost endless supply of it.

So now that the label is out of the way not telling performers/artists that they are not even mediocre, the producer isn't there telling them, "Hey maybe you shouldn't put this out." You're left with everyone putting out anything they want and if you are putting out anything of quality you are competing against an army of bad artists putting out a sea of crap at an alarming rate. It's now tougher to get your quality work heard because the market is flooded with crap because it is is hard for one to listen to their work objectively.
