Florida has some very, very bad laws. I'm beginning to think of it like I do Texas: I would never want to live there because they elect crazy people to make their laws. Miami Herald: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/state/florida/article20191164.html
having sex in front of a child in broad daylight in a public place probably should carry some kind of penalty, but 15 yrs is a bit harsh. 6 months of probation would be more reasonable.
they were offered a plea deal and choose to take the jury trial. male offender has a criminal record of drug traffic, not like an SO charge is going to make any difference in his life. the 20yr old girl might become the next Kim Dastardliness (thank you auto correct) .. really, 2:30pm on a open beach with other people, no modesty when caught???. they made their bed in the sand, now they have to sleep with it.
i really doubt that it's just florida. as far as i know sex in public is illegal in every state. and most crimes in most states have a ridiculously high maximum sentence, just so the judge can randomly make an example out of people when he's had a bad day.
I think that the charges are just straight up bullshit. They were not trying to have sex with anyone else. They were enjoying each other. Their lives are ruined because of other people being offended. I'm offended that they are offended, can these people be prosecuted too? The woman claims that she was not in fact having sex but lewdly dancing on top of him. Which is why they didn't take the plea. There was nothing to plea. </rant> SMH
Sounds like an absurd penalty one would expect from a country like Saudi Arabia. Maybe good to keep in mind things like that happen in USA too.
We live in a punitive, cohericive, vindictive society with all sorts of extreme penalties. this is just one example.
Remembering when a couple was busted for having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral; this is back in 2002 during a stunt on the Opie & Anthony radio show. I'm wondering if they even served any time behind bars?
She was only 20...and he was 40? In the US, a mother can get in trouble for breastfeeding in public...so sex in public could be a no no. Upon reading the rest of the story, only the dude is getting 15 years because he has already spent 8 yrs prison on cocaine trafficking conviction. She is not getting the same charge. And...her father claims she is 18, not 20.
