I had a detached retina. They reattached it...twice. Total of 4 surgeries. And now I'm blind in that eye. But at least I have the awesome photo to remember the good times!
Yeah, it does. I remember seeing an interview with Sammy Davis Jr., and he was asked about losing his eye. He reached out to a water pitcher that was sitting on the table, poured water from it into a glass, and then said, "It took me a year (or was it two? I forget, now) to learn to do that." Every once in awhile I'll pour something...and miss the glass completely. Damned frustrating. I occasionally end up with a glob of toothpaste on the countertop, or on the floor, because I missed the toothbrush. What had surprised me most...is the overall effect on my vision. You would expect a simple loss of some range of vision, and some depth perception, of course. But, the whole world seems "darker". It's as if the vision in my "good" eye has suffered some degradation, as well. Well...I'm thankful for what vision I have, and desperately trying to ensure that nothing happens to my other eye. I like to believe that I'm resourceful, and resilient...but I suspect that I'd be one horribly pathetic and useless blind man.
^^^^^...I Was Blind In One Eye For 2 Years With Cluster Cataracts.... ....Had No Problems Living Day To Day Life With One Exception........Each Time I Parked The Car In The Garage When I Thought I Was Dead Center I Was In Fact Hard To One Side.......Never Hit Anything And When The Eye Was Fixed I Had No Problems....... Cheers Glen.
The image that gives me would fit in here. It's why I hate those words, I get this visual image of a person where their head is sucked into their neck and it makes me sometimes literally shudder.
If you'd like to believe that, then you can be that. Humans are capable of spectacular adapting. Blind people who use echolocation by clicking! That's so cool. Resilience is just a decision.
Ever see the movie “Ray”? He briefly describes how he gets around without a cane or a dog... how he wears hard soled shoes and can hear when he’s passing doorways and such. Really fascinating stuff. Also, a great film about a consummate musician and artist.
