When I was a rebellious and disturbed teenager, they drug me to a psychiatrist. As I was under my parent's very generous health insurance, my psychiatrist maximized my diagnosis. Little things I said were spun for reimbursement. Recently, a psychiatric nurse told me I had been "over-pathologized".

Today, 4 decades later, I tried to go on disability for physical and psychiatric reasons. The psychiatrist at the poor peoples' clinic wrote in his diagnosis that there might not be anything wrong with me, and that I might be a faker. A different psychiatric nurse tells me that she has encountered psychiatrists who take a dim view of disability, and will try to monkey-wrench a patient's chances of being granted disability.

Hmm, what conclusions do you think I should draw about psychiatry? Do the conclusions have bearing on dissatisfaction in America today? Drugging of kids, etc.

It's an industry. It costs money even when provided by a "Non-profit" service. Doctors of all sorts are doing shit like this. Imagine having surgery you didn't need. The psych industry has been rigged from the start. They have never been on the hook for a "cure", only "treatment". So in many ways their game is less about patient progress and more about keeping them in the game till they run out of money or insurance.

I know this because I have used several treatment programs to evade jail. Totally worth it. Better food and being on a ward with women was better than gray bars and horny inmates. If you want to ease into the disability lottery on a psych ticket, you're going to have to demonstrate. Often and in an escalating pattern. You have to make it clear that you don't belong in society and should be under "treatment". You'll end up in a 30-day quick fix where they will once again try to pass you off as normal.

So you have to up the game again and again. BUT, you have to avoid jail as much as you can. Save that for absolute last if you must. The books these quacks use to diagnose and "treat" you are online for the asking. Study up on how nuts are expected to act. However, don't try to be a textbook case. Let them "discover" your horrible malady for themselves. You can't walk in the door saying "my aunt used to beat me, I think I'm a paranoid schizophrenic, please give me drugs and pay my rent". It won't work. There's only a few fast tracks and PTSD is way down at the bottom.

Another thing. They are testing people more and more when they are on government money. If you smoke pot, they will catch you and disqualify you from all that you worked so hard to build up. It gives them exactly the sort of excuse hey need. And they will be looking for every excuse they can possibly find. This is why we have so many nuts, REAL nuts walking the streets of the US. They get bumped out on technicalities.

I think a good psychiatrist should work with you, and be willing to explore options that don't involve a prescription. Sadly, just like any other branch of the medical industry, most psychiatrists just talk to you for 10 minutes and that push you out the door with a script in hand. This allows them to see many more patients and make a lot more cash. What to do? I'm not sure, other than slowly change the culture of mental health practitioners, starting at the medical school level.

The government on all levels is out to punish anyone who has any drugs in their system.
Smoke a joint and two weeks from now some fed monkey will tell you that your pee is dirt today. In FL they use any excuse to get you out of any government services. You have to prove to them that whatever med you were taking was prescribed by a physician or your dead meat.

Here's an interesting thought, I think:

Is a psychiatric hospital that is owned by the Catholic Church akin to a cancer treatment center owned by a tobacco company? And, if you are a teenager, and your psychiatrist is a conservative Roman Catholic who openly sides with your parents, are you going to get quality care?

    hmmm
