Yeah, I'll piggyback on the end of that - let's hear other psychonauts chime in on this. Tests of freedom have fascinated me for decades. Where to draw the lines? That is an eternal question. Do we draw lines to protect feelings? Do we draw lines to make the future a better place?

When we start doing that, when do we loose what we are fighting for?

I mean look at USA post 9/11: I feel so very free, safe and protected now that:

1.) The Patriot Act is in Effect.

2.) TSA rules the airports - I have a friend who accidentally dropped a page of non-confrontational poetry at an airport. He's white, 23, short haired and close shaven. Everytime he flies now he gets "randomely" selected, taken to a side room and utterly harrassed.

Also, it's now official - complain at a USA airport about the bad handling of people and get labelled as a "terrorist" yourself.

    and

3.) When I take a local commuter train to a nearby city or an Amtrak train to a further city, 50% of the time I'm seeing cops or army dudes with big guns and really big dogs patrolling the aisles. I have yet to see anyone ask "Have you got yourrr paapperrssss?" It's just a matter of time.

The above are just 3 (there are myriad) examples on how USA SCREWED THE POOCH on the freedom and liberty front after our safety, comfort and security were threatened.

I knew one of the heroes who died on the PA plane in 9/11. I do not use these examples lightly.

So, there's some examples for a country. Now, we have cosmoknot suggesting that people's offensiveness is driving good folks away and poisoning the future of HipForums (at least that's what I thought I read). Is there a way to make this place nice and civil yet still protect much more than just the words "free speech?"

Wow, this many years later, my condolencses for your loss. I lived there post 9/11, and that sight is ghastly, ghastlier still with Bush and Cheney putting on a three ring circus there.
Yeah, those changes since we've gotten more "freedom" are really something, eh? I'm waiting for the Gestapo, SS, and death and/or interrment camps, wait, we've got Guantanamo with Lerve, and we've got Abu Graib too, awww, I feel the fuzzies inside!
We are dangerously sliding into a fascist state out there, while in here just into a bickering bunch. So what I propose is much simpler: We just don't fucking fight!
Who likes it, nobody, who gets pissed by it, everybody. My whole agenda, which I suppose is fair to say I've got one, is to entice our friend back to a gentler, nicer environment where we don't act like kids, we don't put each other down at all, use blasphemous words or biggotry to make funny business, where any hate-based attitudes taken towards others are punishable here in the same light as attacking a moderator is, you get banned if you call a mod a fucktard. I should too if I called you one now, that's what this social experiment aims to change. Not feelings, people will feel pent up, anxious, angry, and hateful if that's their M.O. and rules or not, that can't be stopped. But if shittalking is not okay anymore, then perhaps people won't keep being driven away.
    Can you piggyback on that?

Well, you can first of all only have one alternative account, and secondly, people shouldn't have to (but want to if only such and such arse wasn't there...) come and hang out where they're known to be hated and have all this animosity toward them. Would you personally want to come here with as much as I'm around if I thought you were crap? That you were an idiot and made no reasonable contributions, plus had bad taste? Doubtful, even with a new account. And avoiding some in question is like David avoiding Goliath, so that's out. And trust me, calling or even if a a mod thinks you're calling him derogatory names, you get a one week ban your first offense. Why shouldn't we all be held to that standard? That's more democratic, more sociable, more collective, and more liberty is served that way.

Isn't there an ignore function for disliked users that edits their posts out? I've seen this elsewhere.

Unfortunately the solution to getting stressed out over internet chats cannot be found in the internet chats themselves, sometimes you just need to step away for a bit maybe you're here too much or are devoting too much to it? I don't know I wouldn't suggest you were, it's for you to choose for yourself. I just know I've had this myself before.

I understand what your saying, but your solution quoted above is not the answer. What about the members who enjoy getting into petty, immature arguments about ultimately insignificant shit? What about their rights to free speech as espoused on the banner ads and home page of Hipforums?

Your post actually typifies the problem with "free speech" in this forum and the world at large. Your free to speak your mind and share your opinions until it goes counter to the goals/objectives of the person/group in power.
So your solution would be to even further limit the freedom of speech in the forums because YOU don't care for the tone or content of certain people/posts? There are already rules in place that address "hate speech" and stalking, etc.

Some members in good standing here at HF have been banned for nothing more than disagreeing with the moderators/owners. So I propose that free speech is a fallacy and only as free as the guy in charge wants it to be, whether it's an internet forum or a nation. Enough of our liberties and freedoms have already been ripped from our lives, why do you want to continue the trend here?

The only real solution is that if you want to enjoy the freedom to speak your piece and live your life, than you HAVE TO accept and DEFEND that right on behalf of others as well, no matter how big of an asshole they may be.

Just ignore the idiots in the forums is the best solution.:afro:

Members who like stupidly arguing over stupid mellodrama ought to be held accountable by those same rules in place for hate speech, stalking, trolling, and so forth that the moderators have the power to use willy-nilly. They used them on me for a week first offense over a misunderstanding, but looking back, the same bullshit as what I'm saying should be policed here. So fuck it, change the motto to 449 free speech forums, I still think assholes should be held accountable to moderator standards. We don't agree, but I know you see my point.

Cosmo, just ignore the drama queens that want to embroil you in arguments.
YOU give them the power by engaging them in discourse.
Disagreeing with you and maybe directing name-calling at you is NOT "hate speech".
If they obviously follow your posts only to give you grief, then complain about stalking.
Or do like I do, read the post, mutter to yourself, "What an unmitigated douche-bag dripping asshole" and move on to the next post. No need to respond, soon their sails will have no wind and they will move on to another target.

Or respond as one of my friends would with a simple "Whatever dude" and walk away.

But calling for even MORE restrictions on who can say what is not the solution.
Isn't that just what the Militant Christian factions in the world wants as well? It's called censorship, regardless what side of the fence your on and what type of speech/ideas you are opposed to, the concept is the same.
Sad that so few are able to recognize behaviors in themselves that they complain about in others.

Imma chime in since you open invited. Once, then I'm done.

There's been a bit of freedom of speech/censorship comments here that I feel are misguided. Freedom of speech (at least in the US) is a right to speak freely without reprisal from the government. Free speech has nothing to do with whether HF mods, or the NY Times, or any other media outlet "censors" something said. HF or the NY Times can take any editorial slant they want. If you don't like it, go start your own newspaper/website. And there, you are free to say whatever you like. Thats what free speech is about, not the ability to say whatever you want in someone elses forum, but the right to say what you want in your own space, free from government interference or retribution.

Like the old adage, you can't yell FIRE in a crowded theater, but you can in your own home.

That said, I thought the HF were a place where open minded people could hang, and if someone says something that another disagrees with, a civil discussion could take place. Or, ignored.

I agree Cosmo, I'd hate to see anyone be alienated and leave. I should think there could be civil discourse. I also agree that hate speech, even mild, is pretty hard to take sometimes. But we also should be open minded enough to laugh at ourselves and the sheer craziness and diversity of the human condition. Stereotypes can be funny. I don't think I have a right to laugh at others, if I can't laugh at my own. I can't dance for shit, like a white boy. My latino coworkers laugh at my spanish, and I do too. Just as I do at their accent's. It's funny sometimes. But not when its hateful. Not when its knocking someone else down, to elevate yourself. That is racism. Or misogyny. Or homophobia.

And I think most everyone knows it when they see it.

I am no better or worse than any other single person on this planet because of my religion, race, sexual identity, color of my skin, bike I ride, job I do.
We all put our pants on one leg at a time.

Spicey, I'm not even going to go there except to say, ya. You're right. I'm in that industry and its fuckt. In every way you say, in most ways everyone sees, and in ways that most people never see. It's fuckt, beyond all reason, and not apt to ever change.

He he, having just finished telling a friend whom I really respect that I've been using psychedelics a lot less these past 3-4 months. . . . . I decided to take a big fat rip of DMT.

Wow, that was a really good trip. Close enough to breakthrough that I'm not being a pedant. Rock solid memory and coherent "story," holy crap what a good, healing experience. Just what I needed. :D

Saw a friend I haven't seen in a couple of months a few days ago and he stuffed a few grams of shrooms into my hand. They been calling me, but the time isn't right for another potential ass-kicking, but soon.:2thumbsup:

Glad the spice was nice to you this time around.
