i hate the way i pronounce "water" i always drop my t's which normally isn't a problem, but when i pronounce water as "war-ah" it just sounds awful and i always do it without thinking about it.
hang on, does this mean that americans outside of Massachusetts pronounce it "wor-ses-ter"? so Worcestershire sauce would be wor-ses-ter-shire sauce?
Most people in my area pronounce it "wishchershire", or even "wishchersheer". lol I think it's one of those words that very few people know how to properly pronounce, including myself. haha
I've heard everything from "wor-ses-ter" to " wor-ches-ter" to "wor-kes-ter" to "woostah" to "worschsta", and possibly even more than this. I don't recall hearing anybody pronounce the sauce but in my industry, I speak to freight brokers all day long and this town in Massachusetts comes up often enough to hear people from all over the country pronounce it in such and such a way.
Bloody hell, that's going round the houses a bit. well the place is pronounced "wooster-sher" so i'd imagine the sauce would be too, not that it matters all that much. (unless you live there and have to contend with tourists asking you the way to "wor-chest-er-shire cathedral", i'd imagine that gets old.) also, gloucestershire is pronounced "gloster-sher" We're a peculiar people.
People mispronounce Des Moines all the time. The S's are silent. Duh Moyn. That's how it is said. Not Dez Moy-nez or Dez Moyns. It's French for boring city or something like that.
My man says "PrefERably" instead of "PREFerably", and there's another one I can't remember that drives me nuts but also makes me laugh.
Now I remember! He just did it. He says "Prerequisites" instead of "Prerequisites". He gets so mad when I correct him so I just let it go lol
I know a woman who says "Everdently". She works in the front office of an elementary school. This makes me insane.
