I think prison should really evaluate carefully whether people will be successfully rehabilitated in general population, protective custody (which should be an elective option), administrative segregation (which means the system has decided to remove you from general population), or solitary confinement. When I went to jail for sex with a minor in 1999, it was really confusing to be integrated into general population. The vato: "What are you in for?" Me: "Sex with a minor." The vato to the other vatos: When it comes to segregation or protective custody, they base their judgement primarily on the crime listed on your court paperwork. Mine was a sex crime that was lowered to a misdemeanor based on my age difference; I was only 19 and the young woman had been 16 years old. The age difference in this case was about two years. Without much else to go on, jail intake technicians (deputies, officers) determined that general population was a safe option. And I became known as "princess"... My safety wasn't really compromised, but any time after that I requested protective custody; even though it meant no TV and 23 hours of confinement per day, with an hour to shower and use the pay phone with a jail-issued (this was county jail, not state prison) calling card. Part of my stay was in a boarding-style facility designed to allow inmates to recover from addictions and then find a job in the community. Then, a farm for inmates who are a low security risk. When I was released, I found my way back to college and ultimately away from hard drugs; though I ended up smoking a lot of pot until 2011. In 2017 I quit edibles and have been totally sober for that long. I haven't had a drop of alcohol since 2013; which is about nine years now. I don't do twelve step because no... If you do 12-step, congratulations though. ------- Prison system needs a little work, but really it isn't a bad way. I think about it sometimes... It's aftercare that I think will make recidivism a thing of the past. Safety in prisons is hard to provide. The goal could be to simply eliminate violence. How comfortable do we want prisoners to be? I have no idea. I haven't been to jail in a long time, and it's hard to provide a really solid solution without recent experience. I think biometric integration may provide better context to modernize our interpretation of prison. Make the doors connected to our SSTs eyeballs! That'll put it in perspective.
This should be in the death sentence thread https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article261525617.html A Florida man was sentenced last week to 50 years in federal prison for producing child pornography of a 6-year-old boy — with the help of the child’s mother. A Miami judge also ruled Friday that Robert Dunn, 46, will serve a lifetime of supervised release after prison. The sentencing comes after Dunn asked a Colorado woman to take pictures of herself performing a sexual act on one of her two boys in 2019, according to investigators. Tonya Lynn Bagley, 44, complied and sent the photos to Dunn in Lake Worth via Facebook Messenger.
