There are perhaps a dozen or more serious efforts to print entire villages, and the first skyscrapers that assemble themselves as well. Printers like this one can use local cement which can be mixed with things like fly ash to make it even more durable. Progress has been made with things like self-assembling paints that are made of cheap materials as well, but can function as a solar power cell that covers the entire house, and there are designs that recycle water as well. The important thing here, is that they are going into mass production at low cost where they are needed the most, and we can expect to see all kinds of improvements and cost reductions in the near future.

It might sound pie-in-the-sky, but there are groups such as Grameen Bank which are famously dedicated to ending destitute poverty as we know it this century. Homelessness in the US is the result of having no desire to put them in houses, and the more villages like this that are built the more morally bankrupt the US looks. Entire third world countries could eliminate homelessness before the US.
