Woodpiles are magnets for rodents. Baited rattraps in proximity of the pile will easily catch the occupants of your rodent ranch. Victor brand makes two kinds, the old-fashioned type with the metal bait area and the yellow plastic bait pad that has a large surface area. The Yavapai Indians called packrat mahlgah and consider it a delicacy. Process this animal like you would a large, big game animal. Cook it like chicken.

I almost posted about the Victor mouse and rattraps when floydianslip6 was talking about small animals, but I didn’t know if that would go along with the primitive theme.

The old fashion Victor traps work the best. There is no better trap for small animals IMO.

I have used them in tropical enjoinments for wild chickens and birds and I have used them in the States also for pigeons and doves and they work great. The mousetraps works well for birds the size of doves and pigeons and the rattraps work for sizes up to a chicken.
You do need to tie them down to something when they get a bird the bird with flutter around for a few minutes sometimes but if the trap is not tied down sometimes they can flutter away in the brush and you might lose your trap and your lunch.

I have never eaten rats and mice to dirty for me, I would recommend putting creatures like that directly in boiling water for 10 minutes before even handling them. Nasty IMO.

I have lived in a few tropical environments along the Pacific Ocean and rat and mousetrap were a big part of my emergency survival pack. A lot of places along the pacific can get very destructive storms every 5 or 10 so you always have a chance of you home getting demolished especially by the coast.
For my survival pack I would bury a 5 gallon bucket with a 12x14 tarp, a few bic lighters a few mouse and rat traps, some basic fishing line and hooks, a box knife with a pack of razor blades, 100ft parachute cord and a few cans of sardines or oysters.
It would cost about 25-30$ to put a survival bucket together, I feel pretty sure I could get by in most tropical environments 30 days with one.

CAUTION! Small rodents can be carriers of hantavirus or bubonic plague, especially in the Southwest.Wear rubber gloves or at least avoiding contact with the cuts or abrasions on your body with the body fluids from the animal. If you're eating rodents and still have the use of a grid-powered refrigerator, it makes me wonder about you.

Good advice, but don't forget to put together a First Aid kit too...anyone in the wild area's know that accidents do happen either to you or another, so being prepared is a key factor as well. I'd also add a good pocket knife or a multi-tool, and wrap the lighters in sealable plastic bags to avoid getting wet, get some matches too.

That's one thing I forgot to mention in the tropics always have alchol swipes and triple antibiotic ointment. I learned the hard way I have a nice sized scar from staph on my arm.

Hunters should note that all cows, goats and sheep, even on remote uninhabited islands, are privately owned. They are often put out to graze and left for months on end. They should not be harmed.

you dont need someone with the knowledge

this knowledge is already built into you you just have to learn how to see different things and play them through your head in different scenarios
