As Candar explains, "Erdogan went to an imam-hatip school, a high school-level institution that educates religious preachers. During the 1970's and 1980's, graduates of those schools could pursue their higher education only in theology." Nonetheless, when Erdogan ran for President in August 2014, he presented to the Higher Electoral Board a photocopy of his diploma claiming to have received a college degree in 1981 from the Dept. of Economic and Administrative Sciences of Marmara University.

The problem here is that Marmara University was founded only in 1982, making it impossible for Erdogan to have graduated a year before the University came into existence. Since the Dept. of Economics was established only in 1983, Erdogan could not have graduated from that department in 1981, as he claimed. Unfortunately, none of these suspected allegations can be thoroughly investigated in Turkey by the media or civil society in view of the dictatorial nature of the Erdogan regime which routinely shuts down newspapers and prosecutes all opponents.

That being said, Erdogan has over 40 honorary PhD degrees from various universities.

I wish this was news for me. But coming from a country where every other politician did the same, just makes me "meh".
And if experience taught me anything...nothing will happen, he won't resign, and it'll all soon be forgotten.

Erdogan is an autocrat who will never resign over anything. It's up to the Turkish people to rise up against that dictator and force democracy and Western values upon Turkey.

Erdogan sure has a lot of phd diplomas, over 40 of them. It is clear that as he's gotten older and wiser he's placed a lot more importance on education.

Erdogan has maintained democracy in Turkey and saved the country from a bloody coup. As an atheist I am glad that the radical Islamic Gulenists did not succeed in their effort to take over the country. Perhaps he should be awarded a nobel peace prize for his efforts.

Erdogan said that in democracies, "you cannot push the wish of the people to one side" but also said "we are not after revenge."
The cleric, whose movement is labelled a terrorist group by Turkey, has denied any involvement in the coup effort.

The Yeni Safak newspaper used the headline "Traitors of the country," while the Hurriyet newspaper declared "Democracy's victory."
Whether or not that is true, the aftermath is clear: Erdogan has a green light to arrest virtually anyone he considers a remote threat, starting with the army and the judicial, and is doing just that.

The Turkish government has accelerated its crackdown on alleged plotters of the botched coup against Erdogan, issuing dozens of arrest warrants for judges and prosecutors and detaining military officers.

Already, three of the country's top generals have been detained, alongside hundreds of soldiers. The government has also dismissed nearly 3,000 judges and prosecutors from their posts, while investigators were preparing court cases to send the conspirators to trial on charges of attempting to overthrow the government. At least 265 people were killed and over 1,400 were wounded. Government officials say at least 104 conspirators were killed.

Earlier today, Turkey's justice minister said some 6,000 people have been detained in a government crackdown on alleged coup plotters and government opponents. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag says in a television interview that "the cleansing (operation) is continuing. Some 6,000 detentions have taken place. The number could surpass 6,000."

It was an emotional display by Turks, who rallied in headscarves and long dresses, T-shirts and work boots, some walking hand-in-hand late Saturday and early Sunday with their children. Rather than toppling Turkey's strongman president, the attempted coup that left some 265 dead and 1,440 wounded appears to have bolstered Recep Tayyip Erdogan's popularity and grip on power. Gozde Kurt, a 16-year-old student at the rally in Istanbul, says Sunday that "just a small group from Turkish armed forces stood up against our government ... but we, the Turkish nation, stand together and repulse it back."
