naaa I don't think it' a practical survival skill really...I've plenty of experience with 45 and 50 cal traditional Blackpowder weapons (cap and ball) to know that even with quality manufactured powder thats ball-milled and perfectly mixed and ground, unless perfectly measured and precisely packed in the chamber, it's difficult to have consistent loads enough to get any good practicing shooting 50-100 yrds minimum. Thats about as far as traditional BP weapons are practical to hunt with.
Even if you can make the purest constituents, you simply can't mill or mix it fine enough by hand methods to be worth a shit unless maybe you're Jed Clampett and all you're doing is spitting a few pellets from 10' at little doves and partridge or something. Besides carrying all that lead around for shot...
And how do you make the caps? Unless you're thinking flintlock, in that case you add even more unreliability.

you'd prolly be better off trying to figure out how to make that Blackpowder substitute they make from sugar.

 

reading that article made me want to start stockpiling and preparing.

and whats up with the reporting people with funny smells? Are they trying to make a list of every dirty hippie in the country that doesn't use deodorant every day?

Not certain, but would start off with about 1 hole drilled in 75% of desired block depth and divide the width cutting against the grain in the form so as to provide 1 hole per 6" to 1' and fill with just enough powder, figure a .45 or a 9mm equivalent charge.

Ummm, what makes you think I'd use a ball round? Or that it would be traditional munitions, or that I'd merely limit myself to firearms when I have a hardcopy of Electronics for boys on hand in a Post societal collapse scenario with no more federal regulations in place to follow and endless scrap laying around from a fallen society?

I'm not worried as to "what if", if it happens I'm not sweating or nervous about it one bit, not solar flares, not Yellowstone,,, Ok Planet X might throw a wrench into my plans I suppose,,, but other than that,,, I got my back well covered, not supplied on anything but some basic tools and some magnesium fire starters and a nice library of reference materials in hardcopy plus a good assortment of pdf's I'm backing up and securely shielding "just in case."

Nothing I WANT to build with society in place and all by any means, but when I DO build barter town but if t.s.h.t.f. first, I'll be damned if some Gang of marauding savage goons is gonna cross my fence line with some dinky fucking wrist mounted crossbow... Unless they explode like Rambo's did of course,,, but I'd still be Waaaay ahead of him on Range and the spot I like most for such a situation, you can see clearly for MILES in any direction with ease.

And I would have air support...

Yep, Fritz would seem like a kindly generalissimo and then we could gradually conquer the city-states around us.
Rather than bloodshed, in the New World dis-order we could challenge them to comedy duels.
