I still remember the blizzard of 1977 in Detroit. My friend's power was out for weeks. And the family had to camp out in the livingroom with a power cord from a house nearby that had power. We never lost power at my home. But I told my mother, would that be fun though? Losing power for a while. She said absolutely not.

But you know it is. There are things you do during an outage, like sleep in sleeping bags in the front room with your family. And foods you only eat then because you're not supposed to open the fridge. It's kind of fun, and it seems to bring the family closer together. You pass the time talking and telling stories, because there's not TV or radio.

We had a scheduled power outage today at 7 AM. And it made me think of 20 years ago, when we had an unscheduled power outage. I had a warm can of Budweiser beer, because again I could open the refrigerator. And I drank it direct from the can. And warm beer from the can is a drink I will always associate with power outages.

I do have a generator, in an emergency I would plug in the freezer to save the frozen good. I do want to be sure to have several cans of fuel. A year ago we lost power, after a storm. guess what gas pumps don't work with electric, so I make sure I have extra fuel.
