I will start ! (but be warned there are more ) "Restless Farewell" Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend Be it mine right or wrongfully I let it slip gladly to my friends To tie up the time most forcefully But the bottles are done We've killed each one And the table's full and overflowed And the corner sign Says it's closing time So I'll bid farewell and be down the road. Oh ev'ry girl that ever I've touched I did not do it harmfully And ev'ry girl that even I've hurt I did not do it knowin'ly But to remain as friends we need the time And make demands and stay behind And since my feet are now fast And point away from the past I'll bid farewell and be down the line. Oh ev'ry foe that ever I faced The cause was there before we came And ev'ry cause that ever I fought I fought it full without regret or shame But the dark does die As the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes Must meet the dawn And if I see the day I'd only have to stay So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone. Oh ev'ry thought that's strung a knot in my mind I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung But it's not to stand naked under unknowin' eyes It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung But the time ain't tall Yet on time you depend and no word is possessed By no special friend And though the line is cut It ain't quite the end I'll just bid farewell till we meet again. Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time To disgrace, distract, and bother me And the dirt of gossip blows into my face And the dust of rumors covers me But if the arrow is straight And the point is slick It can pierce through dust no matter how thick So I'll make my stand And remain as I am And bid farewell and not give a damn. "Come mothers and fathers throughout the land And don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin' Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand For the times they are a' changin'!" -The Times They Are A Changin'
If I'd thought about it I never would've done it I guess I would've let it slide If I'd-a paid attention to what others were thinkin' The heart inside me would've died But I was just too stubborn to ever be governed by enforced insanity Someone had to reach for the risin' star I guess it was up to me
Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone But I would not feel so all alone Everybody must get stoned. Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door But I would not feel so all alone Everybody must get stoned. They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table They'll stone ya when you are young and able They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck They'll stone ya and then they'll say "good luck" Tell ya… - Bob Dylan - "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"
Masters of War Bob Dylan Come you masters of war You that build the big guns You that build the death planes You that build all the bombs You that hide behind walls You that hide behind desks I just want you to know I can see through your masks You that never done nothin' But build to destroy You play with my world Like it's your little toy You put a gun in my hand And you hide from my eyes And you turn and run farther When the fast bullets fly Like Judas of old You lie and deceive A world war can be won You want me to believe But I see through your eyes And I see through your brain Like I see through the water That runs down my drain You fasten all the triggers For the others to fire Then you sit back and watch When the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion While the… You fasten all the triggers For the others to fire Then you sit back and watch When the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion While the young people's blood Flows out of their bodies And is buried in the mud You've thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled Fear to bring children Into the world For threatening my baby Unborn and unnamed You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins How much do I know To talk out of turn You might say that I'm young You might say I'm unlearned But there's one thing I know Though I'm younger than you That even Jesus would never Forgive what you do Let me ask you one question Is your money that good? Will it buy you forgiveness Do you think that it could? I think you will find When your death takes its toll All the money you made Will never buy back your soul And I hope that you die And your death'll come soon I will follow your casket By the pale afternoon And I'll watch while you're lowered Down to your deathbed And I'll stand o'er your grave 'Til I'm sure that you're dead
Subterranean Homesick Blues Johnny's in the basement Mixing up the medicine I'm on the pavement Thinking about the government The man in the trench coat Badge out, laid off Says he's got a bad cough Wants to get it paid off Look out kid It's somethin' you did God knows when But you're doing it again You better duck down the alleyway Lookin' for a new friend The man in the coonskin cap, in the big pen Wants eleven dollar bills but you only got ten Maggie comes fleet foot Face full of black soot Talkin' that the heat put Plants in the bed but The phone's tapped anyway Maggie says that many say They must bust in early May Orders from the D.A. look out kid Don't matter what you did Walk on your tip toes Don't try "No Doz" Better stay away from those That carry around a fire hose Keep a clean nose Watch the plain clothes You don't need a weather man To know which way the wind blows Get sick, get well Hang around a ink well Ring bell, hard to tell If anything is goin' to sell Try hard, get barred Get back, write braille Get jailed, jump bail Join the army, if you fail Look out kid You're gonna get hit But losers, cheaters Six-time users Hang around the theaters Girl by the whirlpool Lookin' for a new fool Don't follow leaders, watch the parkin' meters Ah get born, keep warm Short pants, romance, learn to dance Get dressed, get blessed Try to be a success Please her, please him, buy gifts Don't steal, don't lift Twenty years of schoolin' And they put you on the day shift Look out kid They keep it all hid Better jump down a manhole Light yourself a candle Don't wear sandals Try to avoid the scandals Don't want to be a bum You better chew gum The pump don't work 'Cause the vandals took the handles
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes And just for that one moment, I could be you Yes, I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes You'd know what a drag it is to see you
One of My Favorites ^^^^^^ You see me on the street, you always act surprised You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed Why don't you just come out once and scream it
I can't feel you anymore I can't even touch the books you've read Every time I crawl past your door I been wishin' I was somebody else instead Down the highway, down the tracks Down the road to ecstasy I followed you beneath the stars Hounded by your memory And all your ragin' glory I been double-crossed now For the very last time and now I'm finally free I kissed goodbye the howling beast On the borderline which separated you from me You'll never know the hurt I suffered Nor the pain I rise above, And I'll never know the same about you Your holiness or your kind of love And it makes me feel so sorry
"It's Alright Ma, (I'm Only Bleeding)" is an absolute masterpiece. It's such a lengthy song, so I won't post all of it. Some of my favorite lines: "Keep it in your mind and not forget That it is not he or she or them or it that you belong to" "Money doesn't talk, it swears" "He not busy being born is busy dying" "But even the President of the United States Sometimes must have to stand naked" "You lose yourself, you reappear You suddenly find you got nothing to fear" That whole song is fire. Every last line, so hard to pick a few. I watched an interview with Dylan and he said that he had no idea where that song came from, it just came to him. He said he couldn't do it anymore, write lyrics like that.
Some other great ones: Love minus zero/no limits, One more cup of coffee (kind of a different sound for Dylan), Girl from the North Country, Mr. Tambourine Man, Gates of Eden, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, Visions of Joanna and Ballad of a Thin Man. To name a few, lol. I'm a bit of a Dylan junkie. See him live whenever I can, even though he is terrible.
Oh man, how did I forget love minus zero/no limits? That has always been one of my favorites as far as lyrics go. And girl from the north country is probably my favorite dylan song period. Ive only seen him once and it was horrible lol.
I love this one ! Bob Dylan If you see her, say hello She might be in Tangier She left here last early spring Is living there I hear Say for me that I'm all right Though things get kind of slow She might think that I've forgotten her Don't tell her it isn't so We had a falling-out Like lovers often will And to think of how she left that night It still brings me a chill And though our separation It pierced me to the heart She still lives inside of me We've never been apart If you get close to her Kiss her once for me I always have respected her For doing what she did and getting free Oh, whatever makes her happy I won't stand in the way Oh, the bitter taste still lingers on From the night I tried to make her stay I see a lot of people As I make the rounds And I hear her name here and there As I go from town to town And I've never gotten used to it I've just learned to turn it off Either I'm too sensitive Or else I'm getting soft Sundown yellow moon I replay the past I know every scene by heart They all went by so fast If she's passing back this way I'm not that hard to find Tell her she can look me up If she's got the time
And now he's the first songwriter to win a Nobel Prize for literature. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/14/arts/music/bob-dylan-nobel-prize-literature.html?_r=0
My dad was a big Dylan fan from back in the day and used to play his old records that he bought while in college. This was the first Dylan song I remember hearing. Bob Dylan's 115th Dream I was riding on the mayflower when I thought I spied some land I was riding on the mayflower when I thought I spied some land I yelled down to captain arab, I'll have ya understand, Who came running to the deck and said boys forget the whale We're goin' over yonder. cut the engines. change the sails. Haul on that bowline we sang that melody, Like all tough sailors do when they're far away at sea. I think I'll call it america. I said as we hit land. I took a deep breath. I fell down, I could not stand. Captain arab he starting writing out some deeds He said let's build us a fort and start buying the place with beads. Just then a cop come down the street crazy as a loon They throws us all in jail for carryin' harpoons. Aw, me, I busted out don't even ask me how, I went lookin' for some help, I walked past a guernsey cow Who directed me down to the bowery slums Where people carried signs around sayin' ban the bums. I jumped right in line, sayin' I hope that I'm not late When I realized I hadn't eaten for five days straight. I went into a restaurant lookin' for the cook I told him I was the editor of a famous etiquette book. The waitress he was handsome and he wore a powder blue cape. I ordered up some suzette, I said could you please make that crepe Just then the whole kitchen exploded from boiling fat Food was flyin' everywhere I left without my hat. I didn't mean to be nosy but I went into a bank To get some bail for arab the boys back in the tank. They asked me for some collateral and I pulled down my pants. They threw me in the alley, when up comes this girl from france Who invited me to her house. I went, but she had a friend Who knocked me out an' robbed my boots an' was I on the street again. I rapped upon a house with a u.s. flag upon display. I said can you please help me out, I got some friends down the way. The man said get out of here I'll tear you limb from limb. I said you know, they refused jesus, too. he said you're not him. Get out of here before I break your bones. I ain't your pop. I decided to have him arrested and went looking for a cop. I ran right outside and hopped inside a cab I went out the other door this english man said fab As he saw me leap a hot dog stand and a chariot that stood Parked across from a building advertising brotherhood. I ran right through the front door like a hobo sailor does, But it was just a funeral parlor and the man asked me who I was I repeated that all my friends were in jail, with a sigh. He gave me his card and said call me if they die. I shook his hand and said goodbye and went back out on the street, When a bowling ball came down the road and knocked me off my feet. A pay phone was ringin' and it just about blew my mind When I picked it up an' said hello, this foot came through the line Well about this time I was fed up at trying to make a stab At bringing back any help for my friends and captain arab. I decided to flip a coin, like either heads or tails, Would let me know if I should go back to ship or back to jail. So I hocked my sailor's suit an' I got a coin to flip. It came up tails, it rhymed with sails, so I made it back to the ship. Well I got back and took the parking ticket off the mast. I was ripping it to shreds when this coast guard boat went past. They asked me my name and I said captain kidd They believed me but they wanted to know exactly what I did I said for the pope of eyruke I was employed They let me go right away, they were very paranoid Well the last I heard of arab he was stuck on the side of a whale That was married to the deputy sheriff of the jail But the funniest thing was as I was leavin' the bay I saw three ships sailing and they were all headed my way I asked the captain what his name was an' how come he didn't drive a truck He said his name was Columbus an' I just said good luck
