REMINISCENCE

I lived in and out of New Orleans from 1967 to 1981 (Time out with Travel, Pittsburgh, Miami). I met Jim in 1973 and we lived around the French Quarter in Treme or Fauberg Marigny and spent a lot of leisure time in the Quarter, enjoying La Marquesa French Pastry Shop on Chartres St. (It closed periodically so the owner could visit family in France). Jim liked Baba Rum and I was partial to Black Forest (chocolate & cherry) with our delicious black coffee.


Jim and I parted in 1978, I moved to the West Bank and met Brenda in 1980. We got a place in Algiers and would ride bicycles and take the ferry to the Quarter and stop at La Marquesa for pastry & coffee.

Jim and Brenda never met but this place was a connection to the different chapters of my life.
After Hurricane Katrina, lots of places in New Orleans got abandoned and for some reason this once popular coffee shop fell into ruin. Except in my memories.

I came across a pic of Lorraine Hansberry in a Black History Month online post.

Have you ever been smitten by an image? Felt an instant attraction to someone because of their outstanding beauty? Then find out who they are, a little of how they think and then love them for that?



This woman was of my mom's generation. She died young in her 30s but left a legacy of her existence.

And that portrait that would make a septuagenarian man feel like a teen boy with a fantasy attraction to an image.

And don't rain on my euphoric crush by mentioning that she was a Lesbian. I have loved (and made love to) Lesbians before. I think we would have hit it off had we met (And, I've made love to women that much older than me in my youth as well).

 

seems like if her dying 50 years ago didn't rain on your crush, her sexual orientation should be a complete non-issue.
