Then it doesn't matter that you don't approve of our arguments.

If im not mistaken, you came into the middle of the argument saying we were wrong about our statements.

I'd be willing to be it's tax.

You can tax 'Horny Housewives Vol. 35' but you can't tax some whore on the street giving a blowjob for $25

I respect your opinion but disagree with you, And by stating your opinion proves that you ARE biased when it comes to at least THIS portion of the first amendment.

prostitution is legal in NZ though, as long as theyre over 18 and no brothels are operating in a residential area.

they legalised it a couple of years ago. i think it passed by one vote. :O

Sorry if someone has already said this, but i was only to page 5 or so... ;)

i think most of us are down with Free Speech, for ourselves,

but i also think ALL of us have a problem with Free Speech when it comes to children, ours and others.

i worked as a school bus driver one summer, and because i'm an avid reader, and had plenty of time to do so, i used the school's library. Granted, this was a high school library, but i checked out Dean Koonz's 'Night Chills' and was absolutely shocked to think that children had access to such as that! And please don't missunderstand me ~ i love Koontz and have read most of his books; however, i would NEVER want anyone's children reading a novel like that. The sex was pretty perverse, there were too many details, and the whole concept the novel is based on really isn't suitable for children.

i don't mind if 'soft-core' is available to teenagers, and was pleasantly surprised to see that sex was starting to be mentioned and tastefully described as an act of love in modern novels.

But, there again, you get into trying to judge something based on an aesthetic with personal interpretation, and it's impossible.

p.s. The book? i asked the librarian about lost books ~ if they would replace it, or if the money would just go into a general fund for buying newer releases. i'm such a bitch this way, but with her answer, i suddenly remembered that i had 'lost' the book, and forked up my VISA card. My badgood ;)

This line of argument was settled in court, decades ago. I don't know about other states, but in California, the court case - California vs Freeman - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_v._Freeman
The judgement was also upheld by the U.S. supreme court justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The case basically finds that pimping, pandering, prostitution laws are not applicable (as to intent of the laws) to someone hired to perform a sexual act in a film.

Wow after you stole that novel from the school library did you burn it to?

If I found out a bus driver at the local high school here was stealing / replacing books based on what he deemed as offensive I would notify the administration.

Has it occurred to you that some of those TEENAGERS at the HIGH SCHOOL might be able to tell apart that particular book from reality?

50 years ago you would be burning Naked Lunch and shoving your perceived morality down anyone's throat unlucky enough to encounter you.

The fact that you seem proud to "replace" books you find offensive in a quite and cowardly way is appalling.

OK, let me break down the first part.

If we are for free speech for ourselves, but against it for "children, ours, and others", we are against free speech. So basically, free speech for no one except yourself, which by the way is cancelled out by the next guy, because HE only gets free speech for HIMSELF, but cancels out YOUR free speech. So free speech for no one.

And just to be clear, we are now protecting society from Max Hardcore, some poor schmuck who wrote pornographic stories, and Dean Koontz. Because if our children get a hold of Dean Koontz, our society will slide into chaos.

Thank you Fyrenza, you have a way of going straight to the heart of the matter in a simple and effective way.

He's stealing books from a public school library he finds offensive, I cant think of a more cowardly way to go about trying to prove your point.

I can't think of a more cowardly way for HIM to prove MY point.

All we need is someone like Fyrenza who arbitrarily decides science is offensive (all that evolution business) and decides to buy up all those books and destroy them.

Children are surprisingly astute if you expose them to knowledge and talk about it, rather than trying to control development by limiting access to books.

It read as if you were trying to defend his actions, On second reading I believe I understand more thoroughly what it is you were trying to say.

    My bad.

I was trying to point out the irony, yes.

I should perhaps go for clarity instead.

When we allow arbitrary morality to determine our laws, we open the door to chaos. Those who would support the jailing of Max Hardcore on this thread miss the basic irony of their position: that they advocate the destruction of that which they believe they are defending.

Actually, i donated it to the city library, telling them that i has lost it , then found it.

 If you had reported me to the admin i worked for, they would have patted me on the back! That library was accessible to ALL grades/ages.

But, hey! Got some kids in ANY grade of school? You own, your nephews/nieces, etc? i got a TON of (bwwwaaahahahahahaha) 'Good Books' for 'em!

i know this has never occurred to you, but what if you got a picture/memory in your mind, something horrifying to you, and guess what? You didn't want it, nor ask for it, but it's there, and it's too late ~ you can't UNremember walking in to your Mom's friends 22yr old sons apartment and seeing what was going on on the tv. i was about 11, i think. i would have welcomed someone's protection...

i can assure you that i don't try to shove anything down anyone's throat. Did you miss my last paragraph?

Think of me any way you please, Rude. Miraculously enough, i can survive your disgust.

someone who is threatened by simple literature... people have dvd players and the internet nowadays. keep up with the times :)

i do see where you're coming from though. you want to protect all the young'ns around you. well your heart's in the right place even if it is 30 years too late. books ain't shit when it comes to violent pornographic videos. that is the issue that threatens society's morals these days.. and the kids of the parents who keep max hardcore videos lying around.

Just so i've got this straight:

You believe that EVERY BOOK ought to be available to EVERY ONE, regardless of age?

Okay. So, now it's time to put your HEROIC money where your mouth is ~

P.M. me the addresses of 5 children FROM YOUR FAMILY, an assortment of ages, and i'll send them some EXCELLENT (according to all the critics!) books, with cards stating that they are from you.

Yeppers. And i'm the coward? The coward who will openly admit to trying to protect the children in my community.

And, THAT, folks, is what living in america is like right now.

It isn't just me that would like to protect ALL of our children:

    Ever heard of movie ratings?

Ever hear of an age limit for forums?

Oh. But THOSE [ fill in blank with whatever excuse you choose].
