alright i'm not catholic. i'm an athiest in fact, but i still mourn his death and think he was a good man. he dedicated his life to something he truly believed in, which is an admirable thing. he was a very progressive pope, the first to bring catholocism into the modern era so to speak. he was the first pope to accept the evolutionary theory (whether it's true or not) and that is something good. he was a man who truly cared about the people of this planet and that's also an admirable thing. no this isn't a huge deal for me, but to just say "fuck him he didn't do shit for the people of this planet" is just disrespectful and hateful.
some people are just too ignorant....well, it's understandable if you have always lived in advanced societies, where all respect for other people's spirituality goes down the drain. i said this in another thread but i think it also applies here i have a lot of respect for John Paul II. Where I come from, most people are Catholics, and for this reason, the pope visited Chile during the time when Augusto Pinochet was in power. My people were living under so much repression, these were times when you couldn’t express anything against the dictatorship, otherwise you'd be tortured and killed. On his visit to Chile, thousands of people came on to the streets to salute him, and it was a great moment in the history of Chile. From that moment, people felt able to express their emotions...especially for younger people, who found in John Paul II a father figure. He delivered a message to them, and so created this sense of hope, that some day, our country will be free from the oppressive regime. JP II gave Chile the chance to show the reality of the dictatorship. Also, he played a diplomatic role on behalf of the Chilean people, at a time when we were close to declaring war against Argentina. Overall, he played a mayor role in peace negotiation that as a result, he became a symbol of peace and reconciliation, and so Chilean people nicknamed him "the life messenger, peregrine of peace" Amongst other things, he can be considered one of the greatest men in history, not because he had power, but also because he was a good man, he asked for reconciliation, for a better world, and touched the hearts of many people, especially those from less privileged societies, like in Latin-America. think twice about making offensive remarks about people...it's not on.
the ones that are saying "fuck him" are simply saying that because he symbolizes a religion that you don't have faith in. What the hell is wrong with you people? fucking accept people that are different from you. I mean im sure most of you would say that you're very open minded and you support people of different lifestyles and believe everyone should be accepted but thats a load of crap, the majority of you idiots that said "fuck him" are the same ones that wouldn't necessarily befriend someone that doesn't live a "hippie" lifestyle. Step out of your shell and go meet new people, you'll see a lot of them are very kind and good hearted. and the ones that say he didn't do anything?? you're the most ignorant of them alll! I mean I don't exactly agree with everything he believed in (actually a lot of the things he believed in), but he was one of the most forgiving men to exist, as humans its in us to hold grudges and hate eachother..but he overcame that.
You can respect someone and not agree with them. I have no reason not to respect a man who has dont nothing but be all for peace, and religious freedom. Not once have you ever heard the pope say that all people must be Catholic or face hell. Never once did he make all the members of his cult take poisened applesauce in some sort of lame anticipation ofa spaceship comming to get them The pope is nota bad guy he just has a faith that many of us would consider stupid. But he tried to be a good person and lead his people in a positive way. It's not like he hired the priests that rape children and old ladies. I'm sure he is not in favor of that. He has helped the Catholic Church come a long way. It used to be that common things like masterbation, and devorce were out of the question, but the pope even said that was stupid. He even considered the gay marriage thing. While I am ambivilant to his death as i am not Catholic, I don't think he deserves this beratement. If God exsists and Heaven exsists, the pope is surely on the list. Just because he walked a different path, doesn't mean he was a empty man.
The difference between me and you is you see the papacy as being peaceful and doing none wrong, and I see the papacy as destroying cultures and encouraging missionarys to spread the word of christ... I definitely wouldnt be surprised if the next pope is a lot worse than john paul II. Its not simply because of their illogical faith, its how they try to spread it and their shitty past means a shitty future, eventually. The papacy is nothing I would trust... I would trust a crackhead over the papacy.' and to people who say he was one of the best men alive... -- you wouldnt have heard of him if he was John Paul the Busdriver, or if he was John Paul the highschool Janitor... you wouldnt have said that... His massive power and popularity make it so others can call him the "best man ever" (what a advertisement for Catholicism *barf*) when really there is hundreds of thousands of people who are nicer, kinder, and more forgiving than the pope... but we dont aknowledge them. The pope is not greater than any other nice man... Maybe if he was so nice he'd leave alone the cultures of the third world and let them live their life as they have been for a long long time... Give me the same power as the pope, and I will be the nicest man ever... i'll be like the next fucking gandhi... and ill die, and be praised by half the world for hundreds of years... hell yeah, thats worth it.
I dont think you're making any sense Mui. I dont think you have any clue about what all this is about.
uhhhh the cultures in third world latin america have been living catholic a long time. the pope didn't do anything to the third world countries in the middle east except try to promote peace. the pope has nothing to do with missionaries. you don't really know shit about the position or what it's about. no i don't think the pope was the greatest man alive, but he certainly had the best of intentions in everything he did. all he did was try to promote peace and liberty. he was very progressive and foward thinking, something that most catholics and pope's before him were not. please try to open your mind. i will remind you again that i am an athiest and i'm saying this.
