if it had been a lab that bit your brother for instance, would you advocate banning an entire breed of labs?

could you explain the difference between a bait dog and a catch dog? because i really dont see much of one, other than the baiting was done for sport..

    http://www.pitbull411.com/history.html
i believe i woulda left it as a catch dog, i mean the dog originally being bred for a blood sport is a bit worse in mosts eyes than a dog bred to do a service for a farmer.

seems to me in the end they were originally bred for EXACTLY what i said they were.. as you said early on, its just another term for the same thing..

    i mean seriously,if not,explain the difference..

I have a pitbull boxer mix!
Loves kids, people, and other dogs.

My lab on the other hand. Hates all of the above.
    He bites!

actually no.... butchers used them as what we would call "catch dogs" before baiting.. if you wanna get technical.. its what baiting was spawned from..

    http://www.pitbull411.com/history.html

doesnt matter what you wanna call it,in the end its a dog with a 1000 year history of being bred to kill.

You can be first in line.

I'm not an advocate for banning them. :) I'm against them as a whole in MY home, MY property and MY space. That's great if you want them around you....I don't.

It has nothing to do with media hype, It has everything to do with what I've seen one do. And, yes, if a lab had bitten him, we would have pushed to have it put down also. ;)

Where I live it's mostly assholes who don't care for their animals who own pit bulls because they want a vicious attack dog (they keep them hungry so they'll be better attack dogs)

the dogs shouldn't be banned, but their ownership should be STRICTLY limited.

When he bites, does he hang on in an attempt to chew his victim to death? Our Maltese is also snappy. He was raised with other dogs on a back porch, and wasn't domesticated early, so he's bitten all of us at one time or another, trying to pull some twig offa his beard or whatever. He'll go after you, but he won't hold on.

Pits hang on, even after you clonk them over the head with a 2x4. Their goal is to kill. I've seen it. One almost killed our collie that way.

They may be good with kids (though I wouldn't trust one with mine), but another dog is just bait to them.

Pits hang on by mechanics I thought, not as a matter of choice....

In fact, my lab does hang on.
There is a difference between biting and snapping.
    :D

The two have gotten into fights. My lab has worse bite then my pit. Bigger teeth too. He's done some damage.
Pit's have a super muscular jaw, and their jaws are built different from others. They were bread for taking down bulls back in the day...
It doesn't really "lock up" clock em in the jaw and it opens up.

Here is my take on this whole thread.

Animals are animals. The temperament can vary... I was raised with a pit when I was a baby. I could pull her tail chew on her ear. She didn't care. But if anyone out of the family dare threatened us she would be a bitch.
    My house cats bite.
My dogs have never bitten me. I have a rat that bites. One that doesn't.
    It's all on temperament.
That's why if your smart. You met the parents of puppy/kitten of choice.

IMO, Pitbulls are the greatest dog someone can own.
They are loving, loyal, and a heck of a lot of fun!
Also, known as the nanny dog... they look after children or animals that are smaller than them or seems vulnerable.

Pits, by nature, don't present any danger towards humans--- in regards to fighting, human-agression was bread out of them. How could you properly train a dog to fight other dogs if it attacked you.

And the whole locking jaw thing is fucking ridiculous! They are dogs, they aren't dramatically different from any other breed of canine.

Dachshunds and chihuahuas are considered to be the most aggressive dogs.
Yes, the wiener dog and the Paris Hilton's dog.
