Pirating happens It is a criminal offense, to be sure, even though hardly anyone is ever prosecuted. I am wondering if you pirate. If you do, do you consider it stealing? If you do not consider it stealing, what do you consider it? What moral argument do you use in favor of pirating? Mods, please relocate this thread if you think it is in the wrong section. Thank you.
i pirate books, music, films, sometimes software .. pretty much anything. if i could not pirate all of these things i would not be able to afford it anyway so they would still not get money from me. i also know that this is not hurting the people that produce these materials, only the big companies that market it, which are too big to fail anyway. greedy corporations are the enemy in my eyes .. its too bad that all the pirating in the world will not bring them down. they call it intellectual property, i believe in sharing intellectually.
I was a pirate for halloween when I was 11 in conclusion i think pirating is fun and i like the ocean and ships
I used to download music, not so much anymore, it seemed to get difficult. Now if an album I downloaded was good I would always buy the physical copy because I'm materialistic and need the covers. These days I try and buy vinyl.. just because. But if the album was shit, I wouldn't buy it and probably wouldn't listen to it again. Sure it sits on a hard drive I specifically keep for music, but I probably wouldn't bother listening to it again, so I don't see anything wrong with that. They delivered the album, it failed and I won't see or hear of it again. The morale of my situation is simple. Release good shit, get paid for it. Release whack shit... Nuttin.
I pirate TV shows and movies mainly. Sometimes games, but if I like a game I pirated I will buy it. I almost never download music. I had a netflix subscription, but kept having problems with it. It's not an optimal solution. HBO is also not an optimal solution - you only get a little bit of what's available. If there is a service introduced that works well and offers the bulk of shows and movies I want to watch, I will gladly pay for it. So far that service doesn't exist, and I will do the most convenient thing. I don't really consider it stealing. It is definitely morally dubious, but the only loss to the creator is the potential lack of income. I wouldn't pay for most of the stuff I download, so the potential income wasn't there to begin with, in my case.
What infuriates me most with today's world and pirating and online is just how hard it is to watch sports. I mean, like. Why is it so hard? It shouldn't be so difficult. But a lot of good streaming sites get taken down and I just don't know why. Who does it harm if someone around the globe wants to watch a game of football or a motor race or something? It's fucking bogus. No one steals anything, we just want to watch what the fuck it is I'm betting on!
pirate what? i have no wish to screw anyone out of anything they've worked for. photos from all over the net, of places and things that interest me, as long as i don't pass them on, or claim title to them, i believe that is covered by fair use. all of the music i have, is either public domain or creative commons. i could really care less what is commercial or popular. my own artwork, the site(s) i share it on, automatically slaps a copyright note on it, but my intent, implicit, if not explicit, is creative commons, non commercial. print it out, throw darts at it, whatever, that's up to you. just don't pretend its your own work.
yeah, pirate what? private emails...photos.....? If so...please don't......I do not have the skills to do that and you would not like it if I did that to you. so remember what goes around comes around....if anyone does this at some point. and I wish you bad luck if you do. I am not apirater, as I would not know how to be...and have no interest in learning how to be either.
themnax, I feel as you do...if something is out there in public domain.....hell....yes, I will add some photos I see in my favorite photos, only because I like them....I keep songs from u-tube that are my favorites.....etc....and I am not saying anyone is pirating my personal stuff....but sometimes...it feels that way to me....with some things that have been said....which could have just been candid comments that I misinterpreted......and I know people can get into private stuff...i was told that some can by a few people. i blocked someone once from emailing me, and they got through that, and said they were brilliant and blocking did not work....Now what am I to make of that?
I do not pirate. At all. It is clear to me that it is stealing. The arguments I've heard to justify pirating are just self-centered bullshit. Every one of the 28,000 songs in my collection is paid for or the artist gave permission to freely download. Pirating makes it much harder for artists and musicians to make a living, so in the long run the world will have less good art and music.
but I don't take any music and download them...they are just in my favorites to listen over and over again from u-tube.....Is that still pirating?
I don't think you can really "pirate" a photo? Can you? Right click, save as. There's programs and alike where you can have that option of saving a photo disabled. If I've taken a photo of something, chances are someone that knew what they were doing took a better photo, so mine are all free game.
I buy all of my music for 10.cents/song online. I have heard from a few different people that the particular website I use is indeed illegal, however I am purchasing it fair and square in my opinion, so I don't let that bother me too much.
please explain how it makes it harder for artist to make a living? most struggling artist will gladly give their work away for the exposure. already established and successful artist are usually getting paid a contract amount for their work and then royalties after that. music "superstars" get shit-tons of $$$$ to entice them to record work. superstar authors get shit-tons of $$$$ from publishers often before they even type the first word of a new work. the ones who get hurt the most fiscally are the companies producing the shit, not necessarily the individual artist. Yes, the trickle down effect does come into play, but I doubt it really amounts to taking food from artist tables. then lets consider things like Netflix or HULU. just how much $$$ do you think those artist are getting when I can pay $10 a month and have more or less unlimited access to content? they certainly are not paying Brad Pit very much every time someone watches some movie of his as if they are even tracking shit like that. Now I'm sure those companies paid big, fat lump sums to the differing production companies to air their content, but I seriously doubt any artist actually sees any of that $$, they were all paid up front. you do realize that the majority of actors get paid a fixed salary for their work unless they have worked out a deal for a percentage of the gross proceeds. actors would be fools to base their salary on the financial success of a film (Harrison Ford said that was the biggest mistake he ever made, turning down Lucas when he was offered a percentage of the franchise instead of salary for doing Star Wars) So if I go download a movie for my personal enjoyment, the only one losing is the production company and that is probably a fraction of a fraction of cent. and if you don't think such anticipated losses are not figured into the retail price, well..........
fuck this shit,, its andy summers cam time.. its free to download.. or is it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97IOcfDCvNE
I remember way back in like early-mid '70's when we had some of the first big oil crunches in the U.S. the uproar over the cost of records going sky high because the cost of vinyl is directly linked to the cost of crude oil. shit doubled in price virtually overnight.
